ULEZ

Is it a joke? Is it? What an incredibly depressing read all of this made!!!!
Some people think that we can tackle climate change by doing nothing.:(:( The only people making real practical solutions are being shotdown by lazy, sneaky, critcal people with nothing positive to offer except close down the shops. How does that work?:oops:
You think increasing taxation is a solution?

Perhaps they should do the Greek option (?) where they allowed cars with odd number in reg in one day even the next.
But of course that wouldn't work as the rich would buy another car.
Not sure how you try and reduce emmissions without upgrading cars, taxing people or just somehow forcing people to use their cars less.
Not easy as apparently LTNs are part of a worldwide socialist plan.

I believe MOTs cover exhaust emissions, should we not apply that to someone who can't afford to fix the exhaust or change their car.
No easy solutions.

Make public transport very cheap and very attractive make park and ride interchanges with free and easy parking on all the main roads. (See snottynam)
Make traffic flows better with technology to control traffic lights
People want to be green but punitive measures will turn them off.

A failed MOT means the vehicle can not be used on the road
I know what it means but apparently you can't try and improve air quality because it's 'a tax on the poor'.
So does failing your MOT due to exhaust emissions also count as 'a tax on the poor' if they have to pay for repairs or a new car?

I'd totally agree but in case you hadn't noticed we have a government who applied austerity measures when they got in, they haven't really repealed that yet, on top of that we've had Brexit, Covis and Truss so the economy is fucked and won't improve massively for some time to come. Where does the money come from?
This is also a government that put on hold parts of HS2 to save money and get voters onside. Would/could have taken a lot of cars and lorries off the roads.

Free public transport, for a start. Cheaper train fares, its not rocket science if they actually wanted to help the dreaded climate change..

Isn’t this a labour Khan that’s implementing ULEZ?

I drive a diesel. I get it serviced every year and there is very little smoke that comes out of the back.

Most of the diesel’s that have plumes of fumes coming out the exhaust are never if ever serviced.

Make a service part of the MOT and it’ll make a huge difference, and a great start to getting cleaner air without screwing over the population of London.

HS2 is for passengers not freight.
There seems to be plenty of cash for congestion causing cycle lanes.
Yes HS2 is for passengers, but if you take some express trains off the current lines then it frees up capacity for other trains, both passenger and freight.
More cyclists means they need more space, you’re normally complaining id they go on the pavement.

"congestion causing cycle lanes" motorist entitlement summed up in 4 words.

Of course reducing the road space available to cars increases congestion, motorists pay lots of money to use roads which cyclists don’t, therefore that makes them entitled to be able use what they’ve paid for.
It’s a tax on vehicles and isn’t used towards the upkeep of roads but you know that.
Where should cyclists go? There were bikes on roads before cars came along.

The money paid by motorists is only on motor vehicles, if they have 2 cars they pay twice, the tax is specifically on motor vehicles non of that burden is put on cyclists. It is the vehicle excise that pays for roads there is no tax on cyclists.
Your argument was that councils are underfunded I was pointing out that they've managed to finance all of these cycle schemes, I think cycle lanes are a good idea (as long as cyclists use them) but reducing a two lane road down to one means a 50% reduction of road capacity, for that to reduce congestion 60% of people would need to swap cars for cycles.

And that would be obvious to any pragmatic person working in a technical field. The subject has become political and ideological, practical solutions have gone out the window. What ever goes according to plan when dealing with an existential threat?

It might be cliche, but what best describes this boondoggle?

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies. - Marx (Groucho)

No it wouldnt.

Hackers, the majority of the commercial vehicles using the southern M1/M6 are for distribution within in that region, the inter modal traffic from Felixstowe can't get round the North London Line because of frequent passenger services so travel via Peterborough and Leicester and the ones from Southampton go via Oxford and Leamington.

As for cars well most of them are not travelling actually between London and Birmingham, that's why there are lots of junctions between the two cities.

HS2 will increase capacity on the WCML but whether we actually need it remains to be seen.
