Never gone away has it? The moaners and groaners out in force as per.

OK we've had a crap, badly thought out pre-season and the squad seems unbalanced. I'll reserve my judgement until the comings and goings are sorted and give it a couple of months thereafter.

Carry on, as you were...

You can’t blame people for moaning, but I’ve got a feeling this is going to look a lot like Jock Wallace’s first season in charge, and the team on opening day is going to look nothing like the one that lines up for game 46 (for the record, only the omnipresent Mark Wallington, John O’Neil and Tommy Williams survived the carnage).

We still have a month left of the Transfer Window and, while he’s a bit of a rookie, Enzo, like Jock, will have seen enough from the “old-timers” to know he can’t rely on them to get him out of trouble.

The first season could be a bit rocky, depending on how long it takes him to sort it out, but better days are ahead.

Much depends, as has been the case for the past few seasons, who we will be able to offload, and how quickly we’ll be able to do that.

Then we can consider replacements.

We know money is going to be extremely tight this season, and despite the two sales we’ve made I’m sure we don’t have an open chequebook available to Maresca.

Forget post Season

The first 10 games should show you improvement we should know our opponents pluses and their weaknesses and our new manager should an have an idea on our formation and who fits the bill, he should have a gameplan and the abilities to make his plans work
We shall see

Nothing longer term
But we are nowhere near being Man City.
We have been sleep walking into oblivion.
The first step in my head is to build a team with a strong spine who are physical enough to cope with a very different footballing challenge in the Championship.
I don't want a goalkeeper who plays like a sweeper, I want a Mark Wallington. I don't want a 6 foot 8 inch centre half who is immobile and can't jump, I want a Steve Walsh. I don't want KDH in midfield I want Neil Lennon. I don't want a short arse (Daka) up front, I want Alan Young.
That's nowhere near Man City but it might make us harder to beat in the Championship which is reality for the next 12 months.
Sure give the new Manager a chance but we need hard nosed pragmatism not fantasy.

If we hadn't beaten Notts County (G.Lineker) we'd have gone down

It just isnt practical, in the real world. Players that can pass the ball around their own box are expensive. We cant do expensive.
Professional footballers that can pass (& receive) the ball around their own box should be 10 a penny, it is those players that make the right decisions as to when to pass, to whom & more importantly know where to move to having made the pass that start to get to expensive.

Ok I do not like playing out from the back as one mistake can gift a goal, but how about getting a target man so if you get in trouble you have something to hit and he can buy you time with holding the ball up? Sorry just logic from an ex keeper. On the subject of keepers the new guy looks like the out field player that has replaced an injured Goalie.

What was striking today was that it was less to do with the defence screwing up (though that happened too) but the transition from back to front failing too often. Each time it happened (which really was often) we never got back into shape quickly enough (and when we did we gave it away again quickly). If we are going to play this way we will need to be fit.

I thought Winks played well against N'hampton but was completely anonymous today & after the first 20 we never had enough control for Pereira to be able to have any influence as he was stuck betwixt and between a wider defensive role & central midfield role. As for Ndidi, so nice to see him get forward... 'cos his touch in the defensive & midfield thirds remains shocking unfortunately.

Agree that we need a forward who can hold the ball up, Daka showed yet again how poor he is at that (amongst many things).

Now, this won't be popular, but talking of having someone to hit when you are in trouble you also need people capable of hitting the ball to them and when he came on at Northampton & again today in the first 20, the quality of Vestergaard's long range passing was outstanding. Alas his absolutely chronic lack of mobility means that you need someone next to him always.

Says one of the fuckers who kept assuring us all that we had the right man in charge last season.
Best ignore him, tbh.

Thats the theory, but we are living proof, that it isnt the reality.

So they have extended the season by three months then

I am utterly bewildered and angry that our pre season has consisted of 2 games and jet lag, 6 days before our 1st league fixture.
I know we had some "behind closed door" friendlies but whatever happened to playing at Lincoln, Derby etc and getting match fit.
Top and Rudkin hold your heads in shame.
I sometimes ask myself why do I bother because its clearly evident to me they are not bothered.

We took Northampton apart

Playing teams from the league you’re in would be ideal preparation no??
Villa/ brighton etc have done the right thing this preseason.
Not rocket science

Worked well last year... oh, hang on.

More seriously, the answer is that pre-season is no longer just about getting match fit, it's about £££. They clearly organised this trip way-back-when hoping/expecting that we would still be a PL club & thus starting the season a week later and, as you would expect from a club needing to generate revenue, eager to get some additional income (though any ideas of "building the brand" were well and truly sunk by relegation). I am guessing that they probably couldn't get out of it having committed to the organisers and/or they didn't feel that they'd be able to arrange decent quality friendlies in place of the planned games. False economy in the end as in terms of preparation it cannot be judged as anything other than a disaster. I take solace from the facts that regardless of how ill prepared they are they cannot be any less match fit than last season and, secondly, that as is usually the case (well, not last season obviously) the squad is likely to look a fair bit different in a couple of weeks in relation to some key positions.
