The end of football as we know it

Wonder if the BCC's are going to have another go?
The asylum is already run by lunatics - but the ESL is a step too far..
Doubt the ESL would pass competition law criteria either...

That last point is interesting. UEFA are not being permitted to restrict trade of clubs so can a ESL be structured in a manner that also does not contravene this point? Difficult to understand how a "closed league" would be permissible.

Which begs the question, why did the court not just rule that a closed ESL would be against competition law - so there would be no point ruling on whether the football authorities were wrong to close off a closed league...

Would the Football Governance Bill prevent Premier League clubs, from joining a proposed ESL?
Also UEFA claims to have new rules to prevent the breakaway...which weren't considered in the judgement...

Also from the Premier League owners themselves...

"We are collectively committed to the Premier League and recognise our responsibility to support it. We will not engage in the creation of new competitive formats outside the Premier League's rules"

The Premier League is the real money earner...Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus want a slice...but the Premier League Charter and the new Bill will prevent the whole thing happening...

ESL are talking about setting up a new TV/streaming platform to make all games free to view.

So where does the money come from? Without money no premier league club will jump.

Yep I hope they do it. Fuck em. Rather see a title that can be won by anyone, not this closed shop of cunts effectively setting the rules to suit themselves and never being punished for any wrong doing. Financial fair play for eg is a fucking rig.. it actually helps bigger clubs rather than capping them because of the revenue situation. Man Utd have been spending like lunatics for years on end now.. buying shit after shit because the rules allow them to because they’re popular amongst sad cunts the world over so the revenue is monstrous.
‘Fair play’ just a hilarious term for what it actually is. Takes so little for smaller clubs to fall foul of the rules comparatively.
The league is probably loving it that everyone is taking aim at Everton when they should be looking at MC and Chelsea and their litany of offences. It’s like the sort of division tactics governments and media employ.

It's dodgy ground, because the ECJ still has teeth in Northern Ireland.
But as a general rule, the UK is free from this type of judgement.
However, if 6 or 7 teams wanted to leave the Premier League and join a ESL, then courts are irrelevant.
But the clubs have already agreed not to that and the government is opposed to such a move...

Until like sky they have enough subscribers who can't do without it and they've got you by the short and curlies and charge you up the ying yang for it.
Sky football was a part of the basic satellite package 30 years ago, then it was split off as an 'add on' so they could fleece viewers.

Let em go, FA should have expelled them in any case when they tried it on two years ago. Let em have their VAR and FFP and plastic fans and get some real clubs back at the forefront, don't miss anything about being in the prem which is now no more than a corrupt frankensteins hybrid of champions league and league two teams.

My two-penneth.
This is probably 'as you were' but it does show the massive flaw in how football is run (at least in this country).
There are 3 parts. the players, the teams and the leagues (at whatever level).
The players have the PFA (in the uk) to represent them.
The leagues are represented by the EFL and the PL.
But the teams are not, they are part of the leagues governing structure but not independent of them (i get that collective bargaining is good, but it also leaves open the flawed idea that what's good for the leagues is always good for members).
in an ideal world the FA or other third party body would represent the teams, whilst the EFL and PL would represent the leagues.
However in the PL era the power of the FA has been eroded to literally nothing at the professional level, so we're left with players and leagues (and even the EFL are Oliver asking 'please sir can i have some more' from the PL table)
UEFA uses this to control clubs so that the euro cups could be turned into leagues for money only, to the detriment of domestic leagues (IMO), and they'll brook no competition

This ruling really ought trigger a root and branch reorganization of at least euro football so there is a more balanced structure between the needs of players, teams and leagues, and ultimately, fans who will vote with their feet and eyes if they feel they're been shafted.
Otherwise we'll end up with a LIV style ESL and lots of bad feeling.

Apparently there will be relegation and promotion, thus avoiding any claims of a closed shop, but what is not clear is how that will work.

Will the relegation just be between the three ESL leagues based on performance in that league, or will relegation be determined by a clubs performance in the domestic game?

For example, could a club perform so well in the ESL that they win Div 1, but equally perform poorly in their domestic league, finish mid table in the Prem and therefore, not be eligible to compete in Europe next season?

Villa could be top at Christmas so it’s not exactly a closed shop. Also Villa, West Ham, Brighton all have European football this season the most teams outside the traditional 6 that I can remember.

I’m sure the Saudis are rubbing their hands in anticipation

I agree, this will include Saudi money and probably some of the Saudi teams too. If that happens do they need any teams from our league?

They’ve just done that, the European Cup (Champions League) has a ludicrous one league format from next season, and two extra group games to be played which means more money for UEFA and the clubs. It also means more burn out for the players who are already playing too much football.

I read this may become a midweek league leaving the clubs free to remain in their domestic leagues. Klopp will have a field day moaning about the quantity of matches being played. Add in the extra distances the clubs will travel.

What I am sure of is the 6 BCC’s will all be on calls to discuss this, and probably Newcastle too. I reckon they’ll all want to join as they are all greedy fuckers but it’ll be all of them together or none of them to join. Safety in numbers.

Oh and I still think this is being led by Barcelona and Real Madrid who despite them finding money for major stadium works are still both really skint.

It is absolutely being led by these two. They deeply resent the wealth of the leading Premier League clubs and want to create a system that channels more money to themselves. The proposed league would be a virtual closed shop, effectively guaranteeing the participation of certain big clubs no matter how they perform domestically. This removal of risk might appeal to the foreign owners of some of the BCCs, but it’s incredibly unpopular with fans - hence the backlash last time.

They’ve tried to get around this with the latest proposal with some form of relegation, but it’s a million miles away from the current European competitions, which teams have to qualify for every year. I just can’t see the proposal going ahead in anything like its current form because it’s clearly designed to be a closed shop & the government won’t allow PL clubs to participate.

Title wins by teams that aren’t Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea since 96: 1

Number of appearances in the Champions League since close of 01/02 season so 22 seasons:
Man Utd 19
Chelsea 18
Arsenal 17
Liverpool 15
Man City 13
Spurs 6
Newcastle 3

Everton 1 (lost in qualifying round so didn’t get to play in it proper)
Leicester 1

It’s a closed shop. I’m not referring to Eurovision Song Contest. I’m talking elite of the game.

Wouldn’t the government attempting to block/ban/stop clubs entering such a competition be a restriction on trade?

Can HMGov really do that?

UEFA rules as you know don't allow govt interference, this is why it's all very murky. will they (the clubs) resign from uefa to join a LIV style league.
I think like dagenham/clapham says above some clubs like barca/RM are underestimating how much hate they'll get from fans that aren't their own.
