The history of policing in the UK and the US is that of shuffling more non-police work onto the police so the govt can save money by not running say a domestic violence centre or rape victim counselling service or mental health services
Police used to catch criminals, then they had to be social workers, counsellors and psycholigists etc because the govt didn't want to spend all that money on the appropriate service.

when someone commits a crime in this country there is a army of people protecting that person, lawyers and do-gooders, etc. but very few to protect the victim. I would rather defund them and help the victim.
