Can you be a true Labour supporter...

No, as the school itself runs a budget for all pupils who all have access to the same facilities.

The school band and sports teams as examples were open to all. Academics did not come into it.
So why have streaming? If the budget and facilities are the same, why do it?

You can't teach maths to different abilities at the same time. In my opinion.

And different books for different reading ages?

Equality of opportunity for all.

What the kids do with the opportunity, is up to them.
Very good and nicely put. If only it was that simple.

I very much appreciate that there some great schools out there, irrespective of the system they operate under.

However, kids need structure and a degree of control, some schools are so poor that they fail to provide either. Without that, the opportunities that we want the kids to have become impossible to deliver.

Perhaps all that proves is that private schools do not quite have the universal effect on their pupils that is assumed. Like you, I found that their family backgrounds were mixed, a Labour Party minister (and later a Lord), several very well off business families and a very wealthy youngest son who was required to go to Sandhurst, to maintain family tradition.
I'm not sure it proves anything at all, I've just been struck by the fact that these 4 individuals (100% of my personal sample) have this shared characteristic. All have had serious related emotional problems too. (And yes I know the wry joke writes itself there.) But they do all have lovely manners and are very well-spoken.

My father taught under both the grammar school and comprehensive systems.

He tried.

I know, just pointing out that my experiences are pretty much the opposite. No big deal.

That said, the Chap going to Sandhurst, mentioned above, wrote, as his first year paper, an analysis of the professional and political standards required of an officer as he rose through the ranks.

You are correct of course in the first part

The second part only works if the ones that don't give a toss don't bring the rest down with them.

Many schools simply lump the ones who are too cool for school into a class or two to ensure they're not a bad influence on the rest

Actually thought provoking. Any teachers here tell us how it works when selecting the kids for the classes. Is it like we used to pick the football teams as kids, the mongs with two left feet left until last. Best ones picked first so it sort of evens out with the best players being the captains and picking the teams?

The Labour ones who send their kids to private schools general have tasty big buy to let portfolios as well.

Power to the masses.

Wasn't that the 11 plus system? My junior school was right in the middle of 2 large estates - one private houses and the other all council GLC overspill. Most kids, from both estates, attended the same junior school. We all took the 11 plus back in 72.
