everything seemed safe as a kid, that's what l meant. l didn't have a good upbringing, parents who fought and split up when l was 9 or 10, moved house constantly and very poor, to the extent that we didn't always have money for electric and got shit clothes from the dole grants.I can tell this is straight from the heart.
Most waves of immigration have led to immigrants staying in their own groups. Happened with the Irish even here in Leicester. Clustered in small areas around what is now Lee Circle and Highfields. In fact the song Galway Bay was written here in Leicester, by an immigrant longing for his homeland. Not sure if the boys from the NYPD sang it though?
Are you so sure that the country we lived in as kids was comfortable and safe? I was brought up in the 1970s. Have a think back to all the scandals surrounding children back then.
Leicester city centre has always had its problems. It's rose-tinted glasses to think otherwise. There has always been violence in the city centre. Back in the 80s when I first started drinking in town, there was plenty going on.
There are far more things that are nice in the city centre than just the Market, Lanes and Highcross. What about Greyfriar's? New Walk? Market Street? Belvoir Street? The Cultural Quarter?
How are the Lanes and Highcross more traditional English? What does that even mean? There are cuisines from all around the world in both places?
I mean more traditional English looking as it might of 50 years ago, ok more white faces partly, its just an observation not a political comment !
