Lingers Long On Cank Street
I was lucky enough to meet the late great Pele at the wake after Ronnie Corbett’s Funeral. After a brief chit chat about our favourite moments in ‘Sorry!’, Pele started reminiscing about the Santos tours of England in the 1960s. ‘I could have played at Filbert Street under the lights’, he confessed to me wistfully, through an interpreter. ‘But they wouldn’t pony up our match fee, those skinflint scrap metal dealing bastids.’ Before we parted, he told me that the all-time favourite Leicester player in Brazil was Norman Leet. Only he seemed to have mixed him up with Reg Leet, who used to run a junkshop on the Coventry Road in Hardborough, and ended up doing a stretch for being a ‘latter day Fagin.’
