Football misjudgements

So is there anything that you would admit to getting horribly wrong about football?

I’ll give you an example. During the 82-83 season, I remember, on a long trek home with the London Branch, getting into a debate about Gary Lineker.

I took the position that he would never be good enough to play for England because the only real asset he had was speed. I liked Lineker as a player, I just genuinely didn’t think he was good enough.

As the saying goes, I was on the wrong side of history.

Anyone else care to admit when they got something so badly wrong?

Lots of us were wrong about Lineker .. because he scored lots of one touch goals it wasn’t really obvious what he was good at. Also those of us who had grown up on 70’s football didn’t really understand the huge importance of pace.

You can also be wrong in the opposite direction .. I thought Paul Kitson was going to be a great player and I was mortified when we swapped him for Gee and Ormandroyd but actually he never really turned into much.

I was just about to post the same. I work with a big long time Tottenham fan and I can still recall the coffee-machine conversation where I was telling him Kane would never amount to owt.

Seems this is all about mis-judging players so I'll throw in my thoughts on Kevin MacDonald, who will 'never be a footballer as long as he has a hole in his arse'. Went on to win shed loads at Liverpool.

Yep I must also confess to being in the Vardy is a pub player camp early doors.

I thought we’d signed a top class keeper in Zieler also.
