The Leper of the board.
"He's to good for them"
"Please Callum no, you can go to bundesliga, why go there?"
"Always the same. We develop players for other teams to profit off"
" If Callum Doyle is available for £7-10m then put a bid in.. I know we’re not loaded but I’m sure we can afford it in instalments over 4/5 years? In 3 years he will be worth £20m+ anyway.. #PUSB"

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

He looked good playing for Cov?, my dog would look good playing for Cov. It's gotta be Harwood-Bellis for me.

Yeh right, nothing to do with the Man city academy then?

Alan young detested melrose not sure if others in the squad did and that had something with the swap.
As a fan I was gutted when we swapped his for English

As fans we only really know what we see on the pitch, even more so back then without social media and endless drivel coming from the players which they are contractually obliged to get involved with I'm guessing. So purely on that front Jim Melrose was fantastic for us, scored some great goals and was an amazing impact sub as well. Losing him in the way we did was a travesty.

Yeah I think your right, I was 19 at the time, brain bit foggy these days. 👍
Melrose was joint record signing at that time, Summer 1980. I think I'm right in saying that fee remained our highest for the next six years until we gave Soton £300,000 for Steve Moran. As you say Oxon brain ain't what it was 🥴

Apparently it was going to be Lineker for English, now that would have been a travesty and the diagonals would still be crowing about it.

You can say that again!

The swap was done very early in the 1982/83 season. Lineker went on to score 26 league goals that season, English 3 in 25 appearances. Alan Smith got 13 - did English play in midfield?

Yes, English was in midfield by then. I have to be honest, I quite liked the guy, but then he was also playing in a half-decent team, which probably helped.

I remember English as a striker at first, though not a very good one which is probably why he was shifted to midfield, upon which we moved our fast but not very good right winger to play up front. The rest is history.

Well I thought Tommy English was just about one level up from Roger Davies. I'm sure when he got the ball or ran with it he had no idea what he was going to do with it - hence some defenders couldn't read him.

My lasting impression was once a Craven Cottage. After the game we walk about a quarter of way round the ground and bumped into him, fully changed, wet hair and dashing into the players lounge. Perhaps I'm doing him a disservice - perhaps he'd been despatched early to get the drinks in.
