The story of Jack Leslie

DagenhamFox

Blue Roofer
The man who would have been the first black player to be called up to play for England, until FA representatives realised he was a man of colour.

He started at Barking the non league club I go to watch occasionally.

I chipped in recently to a collection for a statue of him at Plymouth.

LINK - worth a read.

Two things stand out for me.
Firstly In his 60/70’s he cleaned the boots of the likes of Moore and Brooking but also I’m assuming Clyde Best an iconic black player for West Ham in the 70’s. They must have had some interesting conversations.
Also that The Daily Herald reported that 81 train loads of Plymouth supporters made the journey to London. In 1932!!! 81 trains ! Bloody hell. That’s a hell of a lot for those days to cover that distance. Wonderful
