Subbuteo

Used to love this in seventies, just seen a advert for it, can't go back to it after pro evolution football😊

Use to stage entire FA Cups, generally playing against myself. My dad had tacked the pitch to a board, for stability. I remember graduating to the smaller ball when I thought I had got past the beginner stage. Used to buy a new team from the Toy Box in Francis St when I had some birthday or Christmas money

You’d always get palmed off with a headless centre forward
And a goalkeeper with no arms and a face like his

Loved it. We used to have leagues and sometimes we would start smashing the players with our fists if we lost. My favourite was the Alloa Athletic kit . Up the Wasps😁😁

Was over the moon to get subbuteo one Xmas. In my first game I trod on a player, went into the bathroom and found the solution. Never understood at the time why toothpaste didn't do the job

I've still got my Striker. (Non-diving goalies version:()
But not the four floodlights that I made out of Meccano and about two dozen torch lightbulbs. They were just about bright enough to play with the room light off... :)

We used to have a league, home and away fixtures the lot, one poor lad - his mother would not allow any of us over the doorstep so he had to play all home games away, one of us extended the wire on his goalkeeper, yes they had wire at first, so his keeper could get to the half way line , prick, some dad's got involved and made boards for the pitches, mine was just put on the floor, didn't half show the dip in the floorboards. One had 3 number 8's for a bit -wanted top scorer.
and then some 50 years later I got it all back, pitch teams , goals the bloody lot even the ball, my mum had kept the lot all neat and tidy, god only knows why I had Hibernian
game anyone?

Same for me and my brother, did all the cup competitions including European ones. Played 20 mins each way... took forever. Pitch on a board but with a blanket between board and pitch, goals held in place with elastic stretched over the frame and pinned down. Yes small ball as well.
Happy days, but loads of disputes re interpretation of rules etc. Bought in 1967 from a sports shop in Melton and have only just donated it to LOROS. Kept the note books with all the results of the games we played. LCFC never managed a cup final win, sorry to say !

I even took my team with me to Uni. Played mainly on grass there, sometimes non-organics. On both you could kneel on other teams and no fucker would notice. Citeh had some very good seasons then.

The one useful thing I learned at University is that posh people don’t get Subbuteo. Which goes a long way to explaining why ‘Subbuteo Grouse Shooting’ bombed so badly. That and the hundred of acres of baize you needed to play it with.

I was expecting realistic races when I eagerly opened my Subbuteo Speedway in 1967, I was crestfallen
