Question for the green nutters.

What does it take just to make one battery for these electric cars and what does it take to produce the electricity to charge one?

I’ve been reading lots of stuff and if true, you should be campaigning to get rid of electric cars altogether and taxing the fuck out of those with them.

Broadly agree.

They are an improvement over combustion but nowhere near as good as your bicycle 👍

Is the improvement that they are less polluting generally, even if they aren't that much better (if at all) for carbon emissions when you look at the whole manufacturing cycle and generation/supply of the charging electricity?

If electric car batteries were produced with more renewable energies (unlikely when so many are made in Asia) and the National Grid was more renewable, then all would be rosy.

Electric is taking hold really though, because countries have far more control over their domestic energy supply than oil.

I’m talking specifically about the green side of it.
Here’s an example:

A4940FB3-3A3C-4B02-AE55-8D49EB3775BF.jpeg

This is a CAT994A.

It burns approximately 1,000 litres of fuel in 12 hours, moves approximately 250 tonnes of dirt to extract the materials needed to make ONE Tesla battery.

To make each battery, you need to treat:
- 12 tons of brine for lithium,
- 15 tons of ore for cobalt
- 3 tons of ore for nickel,
- 12 tons of ore for copper
And move 250 tons of the earth's crust.
For just - one - battery, which has about:
- 12 kg of lithium
- 30 kg of nickel
- 22 kg of manganese
- 15 kg of cobalt
- 100 kg of copper
- 200 kg of aluminum, steel and plastic

And people still believe in "zero emissions" when they drive their electric cars.... , 😂😂 and we didn’t mention “recycling “

👉 It's going to be fine

That's great, but hopelessly one sided, how about you compare to what goes into sourcing the metals in a ICE, along with the extraction and processing of the oil required for fuel, then compare with the above.

Is the improvement that they are less polluting generally, even if they aren't that much better (if at all) for carbon emissions when you look at the whole manufacturing cycle and generation/supply of the charging electricity?
On the road, electric is much less polluting (especially if the national energy infrastructure continues to move to renewable).

But as Richard points out the manufacturing process for electric cars (esp. mining for precious metals) is worse. There are also safety concerns with battery technology that don't compare favourably to ICE (internal combustion engine).

Hopefully as the manufacturing process matures it will naturally transition to become more renewable (e.g. battery recycling).

oh ! we all believe man is fucking the planet up with carbon then !

if you are discussing cars and stop using "fossil fuels" then why not use vehicles that run on H2O ? but they haven't been invented have they, not even over a hundred years ago !

Hang on, don’t be so defensive. I was asking a question as it seems like a lot of effort man power and resource used just to make a battery. So you’re agreeing with what I’ve copied and pasted but you’re saying that it should be compared to what we do now. Ok, maybe a fair comment but what you’re saying is it takes shit loads more effort, man power and resources to make the vehicle that is used to source the materials to make the batteries. Sounds to me like it gets even crazier 😳

Electric cars are unfriendly for the environment, just like fossil fuel powered ones.
Doesn't matter which is overall better...
Like I said before.
This is energy "war" stuff, rather than corporations giving a fuck about the planet.
It's all about geo-political power...

But isn’t dirty diesel a con? I thought the myth was built around the French labelling it dirty and sticking extra tax on it and with technology today a lot of engines are pumping out cleaner air that they’re sucking in. (Ok I guess the starting point of the air they’re sucking in makes a difference) the problem is though, the same folk that are telling us to get greener are the ones who are driving around in big cars and flying here there and everywhere on private jets and taxing the fuck out of everything labelling a green tax which doesn’t go back into researching sustainable alternatives. Public transport is a joke. We’ve moved from 7:30 to 4:30 or 9 to 5 jobs to a three shift system 24/7 where in many cases public transport won’t get you to work or get you home. We were told to get on our bikes and look for work (taking a job farther away from home) and then they wonder why folk think it’s another con.

The last point you made is dead dead relevant. The shift of wealth from those Middle Eastern countries and those who have interests in them, the fall out won’t be pretty.

isn’t dirty diesel a con?

Would you put your head anywhere near a diesel exhaust, inhaling the fumes?
And then would you put your head near an electric car exhaust?

So no, I don't think dirty diesel is a con. You only have to be near a main road in rush hour to taste the fumes.

I don't disagree with the rest of your post though. Although I acknowledge it will probably take politicians flying around the world to reach the necessary agreements.

What’s putting your head anywhere near exhaust fumes got to do with anything?
The point I made was that diesel has been made out to be worse than petrol when, as far as I’m aware, it’s not the case. Hence it being a con. It’s hardly surprising that a lot of people don’t take the green agenda seriously because we’re told a load of shit by people who just look stupid when called out. This latest lot spraying paint everywhere to stop oil while wearing shoes clothes etc probably made with oil, spraying paint made using oil from a contraption produced with oil. Dippy spokespersons telling us we’re killing the planet and with a little bit of digging finding out there’s photos of them cruising the ocean on a 5 star holiday six months ago telling everyone what a great time they’re having.

You asked if diesel was dirty, I asked if you'd stick your head anywhere near diesel exhaust. Of course diesel is dirty...it's fucking rancid. Whereas full electric has no exhaust, no fumes. So there's no con there.

Then in your last post you introduced petrol from leftfield. It hadn't even been mentioned in this thread till then.
Just cos petrol might be more/less dirty than diesel isn't really the point when the whole discussion is about electric cars.

It’s absolutely the point. Because if they con you about one thing to raise or introduce “green taxes” that isnt spent on “green” things then why should we trust them regarding anything else on their green agenda? Until they start being honest in what they say and how green taxes are spent then I’ll carry on as normal.
Plastic in the sea so they charge me 20p for a carrier bag. How the fuck is it my fault, I couldn’t be further from the sea. I’ll give them the 20p if that’s what they want just to shut the fuckers up. Oh and the same folk who introduce the laws to make me pay 20p because some carrier bags end up there are the same folk who vote to allow gallons and gallons of human shit to be pumped into it.
They’re having your pants down. It’s utter bollocks but if it makes you feel better and more righteous then carry on, just don’t expect me or anyone else to fall for their bullshit.
