P&O Ferries

Now all those pesky EU regulations are not applicable hopefully most companies will learn from PandO by sacking all their decently paid workers and increase their profits and share dividends by employing cheaper labour.

Johnson whipped his party to vote against legislation which would stop this practise

Yet more factual inaccuracies. Why do you continue to embarrass yourself, and as a result undermine your point, by simply making stuff up?

I thought they were trying to employ foreign labour on lower wages and avoiding the need to pay NI, pensions and holiday pay
As I understand it that’s exactly what they are doing .
Oct 21 - Tories talked out a bill to make what P and O did illegal
Attempts to make “fire and rehire” illegal in this country was defeated in the Commons in Oct 21 by Tory MPs

Sorry Foxgolfer but how are the 2 things the same? I thought the bill was to look to address the sort of situation that was happening in a large scale in British Gas / Centrica. Fire and Rehire is not the same as replacing employees with different employees. Was there any apparent intent for P&O to rehire? You seem to accept that that there wasn't.

As far as I was aware what P&O did was not in accordance with current UK employment law (and, yes, I am aware that there are questions around the jurisdiction covering employment in this case). The fact that P&O continue to be a going concern makes their process & the execution of it reprehensible irrespective of questions of recent financial performance or the impact of COVID, inflation etc.

It appears that 'seafarers' are not covered by UK or EU employment law.

Selling duty-free on a ferry is hardly the same as travelling half way around the globe but maybe this is why P&O chose such drastic action.

The fact is this sort of thing has been going on for years. We have been bringing in things made by cheap labour from all over the developing world for 50 years and the great British public have lapped up the cheap consumer goods. Call centre jobs have been moved abroad and we positively embraced cheap labour coming here to do the jobs “we” don’t want to do. This is just another step. Greedy employers are at fault, the public wanting the cheapest price and unions forcing wages to unsustainable levels are all to blame.
Non of this excuses the action of P & O, even if there is some legal loop hole that allows this it is completely wrong.
I wonder how many people will refuse to sail with them in the future

And a lack of customers

Boats simply aren't viable for people who work inland. If your job is out at sea, sure you can cut down on your commute time by simply sailing around the other boats or ram them into some rocks.
P&O needs to portray this as an issue between management and drunken sailors fighting over dice games.
