With the Lions 3-0 up in the series the referee blew for time 4 minutes early in the controversial 4th Test at 13-13,with the Lions two metres from the South Africa try line thus preventing a 'whitewash'. Asked about that decision afterwards the ref said "Look boys,I have to live here"!

The Springboks were well versed in intimidatory and violent play,especially in the 'midweek' tour games, to intimidate and cause injury to the Lions for the full Tests. And they were consistently allowed to get away with it in the scrums and on the 'blind side'.
"Call 99" was the code used by captain Willie John McBride to 'initiate' retaliation "en masse" by the Lions. As when J.P.R. Williams (sounds like Rorke's Drift,doesn't it) ran half the length of the pitch to comprehensively flatten Moaner van Heerden.
