How many cinemas did Leicester have?

It closed four years before I was born, but Birstall had one. The last film it showed was Carry on Up the Jungle.

Well close to me as a nipper was the Olympia at the bottom of our street,up the Narborough Road was the Roxy then closer at hand Westleigh and the Fosse
Plus the Regal, near uncles was the Tudor, and other Uncle was the Sovereign in Woodgate

The wriggly tin roof at "Harry's" in Earl Shilton was great. Watched The Poseidon Adventure in there on a really rainy night. It was like the tidal wave had really hit. Fucking brilliant!

Mind you Television was in its infancy in these times it was around 1955 When we got ours and we only got it because my elder brother was working for Radio and television shop

The Aylestone, Westleigh, The Ritz, The Cameo, The Gaumont, The Roxy , The Imperial
The Magna yo name a few

The Rock

Ok, not In the city... just one of my childhood memories from the late 50s. Recall seeing 20,000 leagues under the sea ( Kirk Douglas ) and Up in the world (Norman Wisdom) Closed in '58, Building on Leicester rd still in use.

I remember queuing to see Grease at the ABC, next to the roundabout about 200 yards along from Ainsley's. Think there was a Wimpy on the corner opposite?

Growing up in Braunstone, my local was the Roxy, but I cannot remember ever going there. I do remember seeing Spartacus at the Westleigh on Fosse Road South, particularly remembered because I had to walk home afterwards in a snowstorm. The Stones played at the Troc, think it was 1965. Happy days.

I remember a school mates' mum talking about seeing the Stones at the Troc. It was just a Shell garage in my time – today's the first time I've seen a pic of it (y)

Sixth I saw the 1966 World Cup final at the Picture House. It was televised live in black and white so it was only a couple of months later that we were able to see it in colour at the cinema.

Remember the Roxy very well. Enjoyed the Man from U.N.C.L.E. so much decided to stay in my seat for the next showing. Got hauled out by my ear half way through in big trouble. Also saw ‘She’ (1965) there: the bit where Ursula Andress walks into the eternal flame the second time and ages about 500 years frightened the bejaysus out of me!
