If Maradona or Renaldo were English, and playing for Leicester, they’d still be overlooked by Southgate. Look at his treatment of Vardy. Look how long he persisted with the hapless Winks for. Look how Grealish suddenly came in out of the cold once he left the Vile.

I thought Vardy had the last laugh, and we were the benefactors.
I don't think Vards was just retiring from international football to play for us, I think it was a bit of an ' up yours' for being underused and being a bit part player, at a time when Southgate didn't have many options.
Why when he was into his 30's would he want to travel thousands of miles with England, for him to only get 10-15 mins at the end. At least we were the winners.

Always found it baffling the only time I remember Vardy and Kane were used as a front two, ( 2nd half in Berlin 2016) England scored 3 goals and it was never tried again! Woy had to shoehorn Rooney in the next game and that partnership ended .
I can't make an argument for him being anywhere near the squad to be honest
England have better players in that position at moment.
