"A picture of sartorial elegance!"
Were they the team that came to Filbert Street for the inauguration of the flood lights?

My old man used to go on about the German team that came to Filbo.

If my memory serves me right:

In the summer of 1957, Leicester City spent £25,000 on erecting the first floodlights above Filbert Street. To help pay for these, several friendlies were organised against overseas opponents. Their official switch-on came in a friendly against the first of these, the German side Borussia Dortmund.

The match, performed in front of a relatively small crowd of 18,398 fans, was perhaps a sign of the good times to come under the spotlight.

City were bright in their display and held the German champions at bay in the first half. In the second, they were far superior and a goal from Willie Gardiner sealed the victory for City.

Just 18,000 odd eh? Snide would have been knocking one out to that!

I remember going in 1966/7 when we hammered a German side 5-1. Werder Bremen?
we played Borussia Dortmund around that time as l was there, think that was 5-1, and they'd recently been European champions if I'm correct ?

Thank you Micky and Kev! I couldn’t remember and couldn’t be bothered to go upstairs to get my “Of Fossils and Foxes”!

I remember 2 friendlies against German sides about that time Borussia Dortmund who Ithought we beat 6-1 and Werder Bremen 4-1.

Yes the one I’m thinking of was Dortmund. They’d beaten Liverpool in the ECWC final in Glasgow. We thrashed them!

I actually remember that, new floodlights and Borussia at Filbert st, may actually have been at the game.

Lifted over the turnstile in the then traditional manner, then sat on my dad's knee, no details though. A little later that year, we won the Division 2 title and the lost to Leyton Orient, in the last game of the season.

We were presented with the trophy, a shield I think after the game, that I do remember.

The electrical work on the floodlights was carried out by Frank Mclintock after the original contractors let the club down. Frank was a fully qualified electrician.

Always keen to cut corners, the club arranged for the floodlights to come over from the repurposed Stalag Luft 17 on the roof of the Borussia Dortmund team coach. Unfortunately McLintock failed to properly install the machine gun posts at the top of the towers, and the club only made them operational after David Pleat had been appointed as Manager.

Somebody stole the wooden slats from under the mattress on the Physio table and Herr Rennie was never the same man again after that!

I remember the floodlights being a big thing at the time, people walking around the ground in the middle of the day to see what it was all about, all over the Mockery.

I did see a very early game under floodlights, whether the first or not I could not say, I was just 6 years old. I do remember the last game of that season though, earliest game that I could put a date and time to.
