Jackie, that states the house price, but surely the relevant figure is the mortgage amount (ie the debt) - is the column mis-labelled?
Reduce taxation and increase spending.
What can go wrong?
And we’re letting themThe Elites are grabbing what they can before it's completely fucked.
Who is putting the nation’s finances in peril though? Surely it isn’t the Tory party the ones you can trust the economy with?
Not old enough to remember the Ted Heath government?Didn't say that. In my lifetime Labour have not inherited a poor purse when talking over, this time they will and they won't have a free reign. They will need to manage the economy, something that historically they have miserably failed at.
Those of us that are older will never forget their incompetence of the 70's. Rampant inflation, worse than now. Every fucker on strike, you couldn't even bury the dead. Schools shut because of energy workers striking. Sitting in your house with no TV and candles because they were striking from either 4-8, or 8-12.
That's why Labour didn't get back in for nearly 20 years. People don't forget. They fucked the country up good and proper.
For the record, I think the Tories deserve to be kicked out, but I won't be ecstatic about the alternative.

The reason Labour have to spend is due to the tories slashing spending on the rail, education, nhs etc to give tax cuts to the rich.
You’re not aware that every government leaves similar wind up letters when they lose power. This was the first time anyone had sunk low enough to use it as a political weapon. They often remove bulbs and door handles. Not quite. I certainly remember Callaghan's.
The Tories take the blame ( some justified and some not) for making cuts. Whenever Labour have been in, the Tories usually inherit a failing economy that needs sorting out as confirmed in Labours Liam Byrne's 2009 ' no money in the pot, good luck ' letter on leaving government.
The Tories made unpopular decisions. Then they took the flak for some of Labours mismanagement i.e Gordon Browns criminal selling off, of the nation's gold at rock bottom prices.
What I find interesting is how will Labour tackle the current mess that they will surely inherit in 2 years time. This will be the first time in my lifetime where they wont be able to throw the kitchen sink at everything, because the economy is fooked . Let's see how they cope, if they do it well, then I'd be one sceptic that's converted, but at the moment history tells me it won't happen.

You seem happy to excuse the tories for previous slashing of spending, will you do the same when they bring in huge spending cuts due to fucking up last Friday?
On a more serious note, I can just imagine Brendan sneaking round Seagrave nicking all the light bulbs and door knobs. You’re not aware that every government leaves similar wind up letters when they lose power. It's good to know that both major political parties are happy to let the financial markets dictate fiscal policySo much for being willing to take the hard choices and be unpopular.

I'm not sure if I think the fact that they listened is a good thing or how they could be so daft in the first place. This U-Turn is not really primarily about the markets which it seems to me are (those corners of it that thrive on instability aside) just reacting to the vacuum that the Government created whilst giving the impression that they had something to hide.
Firstly they could not afford the cutting of the 45% tax rate to dominate their conference & give the impression of a fragmented party. But secondly they need the noise regarding the plan - and specifically the higher rate tax cut which was dominating - announced 2 Fridays ago to die down well in time for November 23rd (which is why they refuse to bring that date forward) when they start to spell out how they intend to pay for their plans. It is going to be a hard sell anyway but trying to sell real-term cuts in spending as a result of fiscal plans that include cuts in the tax burden for the wealthiest during a "cost of living crisis" would be political suicide.
Indeed. They only listened because they could see that the people who they needed to support it weren't going to.I'm not sure if I think the fact that they listened is a good thing or how they could be so daft in the first place.
They certainly weren't bothered about who needed support.Indeed. They only listened because they could see that the people who they needed to support it weren't going to.
With a name like Truss you'd think she'd have a handle on supportThey certainly weren't bothered about who needed support.
