Christmas 1955

First time away from home deep in the bowels of Hampshire on Guard Christmas day at Camp during National Service some bloody culture shock believe me

I had just finished basic training was hoping to go home for Xmas but was still awaiting where l would be stationed and as l was single was top of the list for duty roster a week after posted abroad Germany

none of mine did NS as they were coal miners and exempt. my grandad was in the home guard though and an explosives expert as he had training and a sustificate from the NCB.

The Korean War (50-53) had just ended where over a thousand British Army personnel were killed, The Malayan “Emergency” was ongoing from 1948-1960 and cost us 1443 military lives (the largest losses since WWII) and in the Cyprus “Emergency”,1955-60, 371 British soldiers died. There were also Military operations in Kenya, 1952-60, during the Mau Mau uprising. The short lived Suez crisis in 1956.
National Service started in 1949,initially for a period of 18 months service but soon increased to 2 years, and ended in 1960 though periods of deferred service meant that the last National Servicemen were discharged in 1963.
All eligible, fit men, aged 17-21 had to serve in one of the armed forces. On completion they remained on the reserve list for a further 4 years.
So where you were sent was a bit of a lottery. My dad was fairly lucky in Libya 53-55. Some other places at the time were far more dangerous!

Leicester City signed the great Davie Gibson from Hibernian when he was in the latter stages of his National Service period but allowed to be spent close to home to continue playing for Hibs. This restricted his early stages at Leicester City until he made his full debut on March 2nd 1962.

But in my book the best player we ever bought what a partnership with Stringfellow.
When I first saw them one small diminutive lad the other a tall gawky type l thought what the hell have we spent our money on but my christ they soon proved what an inspired signings they were don't think we have ever had a better duo
