Car advice.

Brauny

The optimistic pessimist
I am having a problem with inserting my car key in the ignition barrel. It started to become more awkward and harder to insert and turn in the last couple of weeks. I can see that the key is worn down in a couple of places and will need replacing.
Unfortunately it could be the barrel which needs replacing and that's an expensive job.
I called my mobile mechanic this morning and he said to try a lock lube first. He also said to only use WD40 as a last resort, as can sometimes make it worse. Another person as also verified that.
So any recommendations on what to get and possibly where to go ?
I am not sure if a silicone spray would help the problem?
Any advice welcome.

Thanks.

Get some pencil lead and break a couple pieces off about 1/8 of an inch. Stuff a piece into the key slot and jam it in with the key. Repeat with the second piece of lead. It's an old locksmith trick that might help.
I do it with our front door which gets battered with sand and salt water.
