1969/70 First game

6th August 69 - Relegated cup finalist v Birmingham City at a packed Filbert Street, Team Shilton, Houghton, Nish, Rodrigues, Sjoberg, Cross, Manley, Fern, Lochhead, Gibson, Glover. 3-1 win with goals from Fern, Lochhead and Manley. The stand out goal was from Rodney Fern with a brilliant overhead kick that was shown on the start of ITV star soccer (shown on Sunday afternoons) for the rest of that season. The gate was 35,168, loads of skinheads with staypress, braces, docs, Ben Sherman shirts, in the hot and noisy kop. Frank O'Farrell's team finished third that season, champions in 70/71. Great days, where has 54 years gone!

My first was Fec 11th 1971
City 0 Spurs 1
Sat on the Pop wall , Kop end .
Hooked for life.

I did go to a game mid 60s with my Dad but showed little interest. 68/69 I went with my friends Martin and Neil, we were all 11 years old, I remember playing Forest, I think it was 2-2,I was sat on the wall on the pop side. That started the journey, favourite days were Bloomfield, Big Jock, Milne, Little and O'Neil.

I was Filbo end never seen anything like Rodney’s goal before soon trying afterwards down the Recc

So I too was at the game. Remember we played them first game of the season a few years later. 3-3. Mayhem on what is now Nelson Mandela park.

We kept all the players from the relegated side apart from mardy Clarke. Remember them all v well but who the hell was Houghton?

Full back, came from Ipswich, I think

Signed him from Ipswich, only played 6 games, couldn’t get in the team because of the mighty woollet! Sold to Barnsley

Went to this game with big brother Seamus, was Houghton a player we got from Ipswich? I collected the old footy stickers back then and the one of him looked like a kid had drawn his shirt on, a chap on Twitter who posts all things football memorabilia showed me a pic i
of Houghton in a red ‘coloured in’ shirt, always stuck in my memory, great goal by Fern though…

Just like this season we had the talent to avoid relegation but for different reasons didn’t. We started the new 69/70 season full of optimism that we would bounce straight back but had a mid season slump and maybe were not streetwise enough for Div 2. The signings of Kellard and Carlin the following summer changed all that. Who can be optimistic that we will bounce back this time? Predictable but all of our best players, not just one, are leaving us.

We’d have gone up if the torrential rain hadn’t have happened vs Blackpool. Rodney’s goal got stuck in the puddle.

I was there also about half way down the pop side. It was a brilliant effort from Rodney. Because it was so unexpected, there was a brief collective gasp from the crowd before the celebrations. Similar to the Claridge goal in the play offs years later.
I was so impressed, I hand wrote my own (I was just 13) report on the match which I pasted in a scrap book, which I’ve still got somewhere.
From memory Summerhill was the Birmingham scorer and I think the ref was Ray Tinkler.
