It is. But if a player is stalling on signing a new contract then cash in and take the flak.
Football is a ruthless business..Rudkin isn't.
You can only cash in if there is an offer on the table that suits both the club and player. Not sure that ever existed.

Enough people complaining about the fees we have taken for Maddison and Barnes, there would have been a meltdown had we accepted £20m for Tielemans and there were plenty on here and FT that said they’d sooner keep him than let him go for that amount.

Said it many times before, he isnt top class, and can be a passenger. No player whose weight, form and attitudefluctuate like his does, will dine at the top table. Therefore, not good enough, tslented but severely flawed.

If they had let him go for £20m amount after the final then that would have been terrible (no profit) and a year later hardly a transformational profit but as he would have been under contract I think it reasonable to suggest we'd have got more anyway... except I too am not convinced that anybody was willing to stump up for him.

Personally I think the "big" clubs (the ones with CL football which you suspect is what he was after) recognised that he needs to be the one pulling the strings but that when push came to shove none were willing to change their system or personnel to allow him to do that. Given that, I suspect his reluctance to sign an extension also made it less likely that those clubs he was probably hoping would come in for him during any transfer window during the last 2 years would do. I mean why spend a load on someone who, whilst you might rate them, you are not convinced is going to make a difference and if a) it is clear that there is not that much realistic competition for their signature and b) he'll be available for a free any time soon. I suspect he was hoping it would make him more in demand but in reality it might well have had the opposite effect especially in the light of a drop off in performance level.

I don't believe we ever had a plan to sell one star player every year, it just panned out that way.
Yeah, that's what strikes me about it all too and in 2021/22 I always felt that the decision was less to do with us not selling a player as deciding to buy regardless of the fact that we didn't sell.
Schmeichel surprised me when he went to Nice but he is now finally at "a big club" Anderlecht.
Fofana was the sale last year, Schmeichel always felt more like a personality thing though financially it did remove one of the biggest (probably the biggest after Vardy) salaries.
As for this year's exits, I wish Maddison & Barnes the best but the memory of watching Youri perform at 10% of his best for the past two years makes me want him to fail, So far, he is.
I will wish them all the best and think fondly of them... when they pack up their boots. Until then I might wish less misfortune on those players who leave more as much at the behest of the club than those who actively want out but it's all relative.

To me a enigma so much to offer in his formative years here but there were times where you wondered where his heart was. For his last 18 months here, he left you wondering who would turn up, great players play with purpose sadly Youri left you with a
Glimpse of greatness.
