To piss on this statistical parade slightly he does sometimes slow things down and butcher counters/attacks sometimes to make a safe/negative pass.
So encouraging perfect passing stats could be encouraging negative play at times.
He’s doing very well on the whole and is very tidy on the ball but this isn’t something I’m gonna get the marching band out for.

That's ridiculous! He is already the real deal. The most effective passer of the ball we've had for a very long time.

He is completely risk averse though.

When it comes to backwards passing, I think it has less to do with Wink’s risk aversion and more to do with fans perception. If you consider a backward psss as a piece of art, you will enjoy the game more!

Winks is playing as Enzo wants him to. Looking after the ball, keeping possession and control, keeping the point of attack fluid, not just losing it easily, tiring the opposition. Not explosively exciting but grinding the oppositions nuts, thats our game now and its being very successful.

If you have ever played the game yourself you will know that passing to someone and receiving a pass straight back can be all the difference to give you the time to make the next move. Suddenly space opens out up in front of you. For our defence knowing that the Winks metronome will keep the ball no matter what is what I stills the confidence for us to play this way and open up options in due course. It’s wonderful to watch

He's absolute quality and it's people who don't really understand football who are critical. He plays in that little hole, pulling all the strings, if he has to play backwards to maintain possession and look to start again from a different angle he'll do it. I can't see anyone else doing what he does if he's suspended or injured.
