What a shit game.

Well, that was a first - our oppo in a big game froze, didn’t turn up. Very nice indeed.
Can anyone remember that happening before?

Such was the poor standard of technique on show I never felt the slightest nerves. I was embarrassed a bit because we only played to our standards in patches. I think nerves got to both sides and the foul count and poor finishing meant a stuttering, error strewn affair.
Yes, I know all about the importance of the result but looking forward to meeting Chelsea, unless we regain our ability to control games we will be in the position that S'oton were yesterday, second favourites.
The introduction of a half fit Madds and the ever grafting MarcA saw a noticeable improvement near the end, as we had square pegs in square holes. Fortunatelty S'oton did not play above themselves. as they needed to.
A positive is that we won without approaching our best and falling back on guts and graft were enough.
So does the result mean the performance need not be examined? No, because in most matches the one leads to the other.

Think the last decent set of semi final's were when they were both on a Sunday for the first time and both were shown live on a Sunday in 1990.

Palace 4-3 Liverpool (Villa Park)
Oldahm 3-3 Man United (Maine Road)

Funny you should mention you didn't feel nervous because I had a few twitchy moments in the first half when Southampton pressed and harried as we tried to play out from the back, sometimes too elaborately for my liking. All it needed was one error or a good foot in from a Saints player and we could have been in trouble. Sometimes a more direct approach seemed more appropriate - at least less intricate passing in the danger area when under pressure.

Yes, you're right they did have a spell when they went behind and it was what the game needed to break the yawn inducing deadlock as the game opened up which suited us as we like space to get our front men moving.
And yes, there is a time and place for fannying about playing to feet in your own box, but S'oton fortunately were not sufficiently capable of taking advantage. I did notice that KS kicked from hands rather more than usual though.
Really looking forward to Thursday especially as Madds may be more effective. It's at full back where BR has a real problem, having two right siders. The decision has to be made - which of Tim or a rehabilitating Ric is the least uncomfortable on their wrong side. Perhaps the answer is to play young Thomas and retain Tim on his right side and give Ric a rest.

Thomas left, Tim right, Ric or Marc in front of Tim, and Madders doing his own thing.
Jamie huffing and puffing, Nacho doing what he's been doing for the last few games (hopefully!)

Oxon, the average pitch size of the 'big six' is 105x67m, Wembley is 105x75m, so a bit wider than most.
Ours is 105x68..
The grass is supposed to be an energy sapper but Glen Hoddle says it is no longer as it is not exceptional now...
I know, I should get out more...
