What is it with the British psyche and this shower that means people clamour to have them ‘rule over us’.

Surely the best thing to do is when Betty passes away is shut the whole sham down. It’s 2021 are we not grown up enough to realise that pretending these people are somehow better than the rest of the population, is a bit pathetic?

The way the media are soiling themselves over the James Hewitt look-a-like is embarrassing.

Regarding the last point, the only reason the media are soiling themselves is that the bloke has stated he’d prefer to deal with them on his own terms.

Which is fair enough, considering the “public interest” card is played all-too-often by the media for people like him.

The vastly differing ways his wife & William’s wife were treated over the same subjects probably made his mind up for him.

Something to consider, is that when you get beyond the personalities involved (as repulsive as they may be) - the Crown is a legal entity that stands between the government and the population, as a protective measure. At least in the colonies.

He’d prefer to deal with the media on his own terms whilst trying to register domain names and sign Spotify deals to....capitalise on his background.

They’re all completely out of touch.

Let them choose one of their houses. Sell the others.

The monarch does all the walking around and smiling.

The others have to go and get jobs.

Distribute the money raised so that no-one in this country has to rely on food banks.

Could be a vote winner.

In general terms I used to be quite comfortable with the concept of an hereditary Royal Family.

Main because it removed a substantial layer of extra troughing opportunities to the venal and corrupt political class.

That said, the entire family has been falling apart for years, of the current bunch Anne appears to be decent, the rest just awful.

In recent times the Crowns obligation have been eroded to the point that it is now a rubber stamp for an increasingly out of control parliament.

I can’t say I really care either way. Foreigners love it and it’s good for relations with other countries. Having the Royal Family doesn’t cause anyone harm so why change it?

Queenie is our head of state. If we got rid of the royals that would put Boris in total charge of everything.

Oh and a good chunk of our pubs would need to be renamed.

When did the crown last really have a say?

Rather a long time ago SF.

That said I think that the queen served a very useful purpose in the last century, setting a tone that many people found helpful and 'reminding' the government of the day of their obligations both personally and via the Privy Council.

That, and the way she carried out her ceremonial duties made her worthwhile to me.

Not really but I could do without all the shit that goes with “our” royal family.

Quite like Princess Anne. The Queens alright.

After that it’s a load of bollocks really.

I like the idea of a separate head of state but really do not want another politician involved.

Hence my thought that a monarchy is not the worst idea. Perhaps loose the current Royal Family as not fit for purpose and appoint the most senior hereditary peer king or queen for ceremonial duties only.

A proper written constitution will protect the people from parliament so covering all bases.

Something we agree on. A written constitution.

I like the idea of an independent head of state.

Chairman and CEO shouldn't be the same person.

I personally think the head of state should have more power in the UK.
That would make the position political, something I would very much want to avoid.

Ceremonial stuff only for me, represent the country, wave the flag, be nice.

Do it for 10 years then appoint your replacement, Nice ceremony, St Pauls or the Abbey (definitely not in parliament), swear to uphold the constitution.

Possibly have the right, if necessary, to compel the government to call a general election, would have to be a resigning issue though.

Never actually seen one them, maybe they don’t exist, maybe I’m turning into Jackie
Shame. I have approached this from my simplistic idea of what a head of state in modern Britain actually need to do.

What the current royal family actually do is probably something else entirely. I would love to know haw much actual 'head of state' work is done.

The House of Lords are a mixed bunch, the old style hereditary peers kind of work for me, no real axe to grind beyond a natural support of the status quo. Would not be a bad thing given the excesses of parliament in recent years.

The modern life peers, not so much, political lackies venal and lacking any independent views, they should be sacked immediately.
