The Perfect Album

2022 mix of Revolver

Always had a problem with this. Who the f*ck is Giles Martin and why does he have the keys to the car? If Dave Clark's roadie's second cousin twice removed started screwing around with DC5 tracks and skimming off the top I'd be furious.

The Perfect Album

Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel - Duane Eddy

Any of Wire’s first three albums are deserving of a mention, each magnificent and entirely brilliant.

The debut ‘Pink Flag’ (1977) is a classic three-chord, short sharp shock guitar abuse, delivered at breath taking speed and accompanied by intelligent, surrealist poetic lyrics. Rarely have three chords and the English language been put to better use than by Wire.

The follow up, ‘Chairs Missing’ (1978) was not radically different, it still has the firepower but now with sonic atmospherics.

But for me 154’ (1979) is ‘the perfect album’. Lyrical intrigue, haunting melodic soundscapes but still with their trademark guitars. Thirteen mini strokes of genius, it’s like listening in to someone’s thoughts, a schizophrenic drip-drip-drip of doubt with the ever present sound of coiled anger, writhing slippery rhythms and sudden rays of insight and pop sunshine.
