This came up on Facebook. A reminder of what the pitch looked like after the end of winter and all the chemicals that were put on it to keep games on.

Horrible night was it the tank who decked sniffer that night !
I saw the tank that night floor some Blackpool striker on the halfway line when we had a corner bless him

Worst ever pitch was LCFC v Blackpool 31/3/70 liquid mud, 0-0
I may be wrong but I'm sure I seem to remember that this game was actually called off with about 40k in the ground. We were asked to wait for an announcement regarding the re-arranged date, only to be then told the game was now back on.
It was a farce, I recall us having a shot on an open goal & the ball stuck in the mud about 3 yards out

It was pathetic, a terrible pitch although for some reason I remember, just, one against the shaggers that was really bad as well, or was it the bumball ground?

my old man 75 last week no fairy stories for me was no t jack and the bean stork, it was gibbo, banks, appleton, qoted for the double

I was playing Mutual League football at the time, the majority of local football was decimated that winter. The upside was more time spent at Filbo watching the games.

Yep. It was literally pissing down. Huge puddles on the pitch. Groundsmen desperately trying to fork the pitch. It was called off. Then suddenly on again. Officially just over 32000 there but probably more as per in those days.
If I remember rightly dear old Rodney went round the goalie and knocked the ball into the open net. He was already celebrating when it stuck in the mud a yard from the goal line, to be kicked away by their defender. Win that and we’d have almost certainly gone up.
