Never mind the result, it was only Scotland :)
His ridiculous tantrum about the treatment maguire gets is rather pathetic.
the player is average, cannot get regular first team football, when he does he's rubbish, and southgate picks him regardless because he's doing what most england managers do, pick name from a big team over form.
he's played more minutes for England than Man Utd this season and even scored for the jocks today.
And Southgate loves him.

You win International tournaments by beating the world's best sides in competitive games under intense pressure.
Ramsey did that.
Southgate does not do that. He defaults to players/formations that he 'trusts', and England lose.
Well organised, difficult to beat, but Scotland did not have a shot on target last night.
Judge Southgate against Spaletti at Wembley in October. He'll play for the draw, and be outwitted again. And repeat.

Blessed with dream draws everywhere he goes and a ridiculously good squad of attacking players yet constantly chooses to put agendas first. Reverts to type in the big moments too.

Don’t think he’s ever let England down and he was great for us , but there are better players now . If he’d left Manure he would be dropped like an hot chip by Southgate - and he knows it - hence his refusal to leave them .
. Dunk was superb last night .
 
Can't see any point or anything to gain by bringing him on at half time in a friendly why not use it to try a new player? It’s a surprise he didn’t put Henderson on when it went to 2-1 to secure the win

I'm not asking for him to be sacked but lets be clear here. His reliance on certain players who are not good enough rather than playing a player bang on form is what stops us from going from losing semi finalists and losing finalists to winners.
If you want to invoke Ramsey, would Southgate have dropped Greavesie for the '66 final? Ramsey kept a winning team with in form players rather than drop Hurst and reinstate the name player who had recovered from injury.
 
He loves an empty virtue signalling gesture and wears a waistcoat well.
The same stuff he does in big games Sven used to get battered for.
Claimed to be a man of principle who picked on club form but seems to keep picking blokes that don’t get a game + ignoring players when they perform well for smaller clubs but amazingly realising they exist once they get to a BCC.
People just beg for and lap up mediocrity. We deserve all we get.

What it has to do with it is idiots hold him up as deserving of his place because he’s a ‘nice guy’. Which whether I agree with it or not is irrelevant.
And on the statement itself..
He wanted the team to wear the one love arm band until it caused an inconvenience. Goes on about how much he supports LGBT then endorses Henderson moving to head chopper land.
Supports Black Lives Matter but knows fuck all about it.
You can think it’s a nonsense statement if you want.
I would respect him if there was some conviction behind any of it.

None of that has anything to do with team selection or tactics.

No need to get your knickers in a twist. Just wondered why you mentioned such things on a thread discussing who he picks and tactics, as they don't tend to have any influence on such matters.
 
Southgate is frustrating. We are so close to being an outstanding team but one or two selections / comments undermine things.

Maguire is an issue - how many games will he realistically play between now and the Euros? Southgate needs to be mitigating that, not using internationals to keep the guy partially match fit. Kalvin Philips is in the same discussion.

His comments on Foden not being able to play in the "10" position left him open to some ridicule. That kid is so talented he could play anywhere in the front line (and had played in the ten role on occasion for Man City).

We should be looking to go out and smash teams with the depth of talent available. Drop the two defensive midfielders and play players who are getting regular game time and the criticism will stop from most fans. Just let the handbrake off...

In fairness the title is ‘Southgate’.
Not ‘Southgate’s picks and tactics’.
I’ll dust off me crystal ball next time I go to speak incase I upset the thread police.

Best - wrong generation, nationality and dead

Maddison and Grealish are more flare players than Bellingham and Foden?
