The more you read about this, the more it seems that those running the Premier League were broadly in favour of it, or at least wary of appearing against it. Let it happen, and let’s be rid of them.
I’m still annoyed we couldn’t secure one more win to finish in the top four rather than having to rely on another team being punished.It is partly our "fault". The problem the "big" clubs have, is that two things could undermine their cartel.
The first is that a club can come into the Premier League and attract a group of underachievers and players with a point to prove and go on to either win the title, or occupy a top four spot. All it takes is a squad with team spirit, focus and unrecognised talent. Which is what 2015/16 was all about.
The second problem is the money in the Premier League. Yes the "big" clubs have a greater income, but the rest of the division still earn an absolute fortune. Which means that other teams can build very decent squads, leading to them challenging for the top spots.
Leicester City combine both of these threats to the established clubs.
Their only hope is to diminish the incomes of the outsiders and to close access to European competitions.
Everytime a team like Leicester gets a top four spot; it costs one of the "big" clubs around £70m. I'm still annoyed that Man City wriggling out of their FFP sanctions; cost us £70m. Farcical...
