Pompey 71: A fella on FB needs a bit of info

mickyhoss

The music was thud like.
I'm looking for a bit of assistance. Is there anyone on here who was at Fratton Park, Portsmouth on May 1st 1971 when we beat Pompey 2-1 to complete the Second Division Championship winning season?
I'd really like to know if anyone remembers if the Championship trophy was presented after the game.
The Mercury said before the game that City would not receive the trophy at Portsmouth and were trying to arrange a presentation during John Sjoberg's testimonial match v Derby after the season finished.
OF&F says the trophy was presented at Fratton Park

Ask David Nish he got presented with the trophy after the match Sjobergs testimonial was end of May we played Derby County then O'Farrell fucked off to Man Utd

Thanks for the help Micky. There seems a bit of confusion about the 71 Division 2 trophy presentation. The Mockery said in the Friday edition before the Pompey game that the trophy would not be presented after the game and the club were trying to organise a presentation at Filbert Street possibly at the Sjoberg testimonial against Derby later in May

Some who were at Fratton Park swear blind Nish got the trophy in a presentation in the Portsmouth directors box after the game. Others say it was presented after the testimonial.

Could it have been presented twice?

OF&F says the Pompey game but I’ve been in touch with Dave Smith and he’s not 100% sure either

Appreciate any help

My Dad took me to the Sjoberg testimonial game v Derby and as Kendal said the trophy was presented to Nish and the team in the Main Stand after the game.

Looks like I found the answer on the cover of the Sjoberg testimonial programme

Says on lcfc web site with picture of nish holding trophy that it was presented after the game....
Surely someone has a picture of nish or even Fiona Bruce.

I was there and do not remember the trophy being presented. I do remember it was a boiling hot day and the pitch was like concrete. Also the scummy Pompey fans who were not impressed at our performance.

I'm sure I helped Nishy off the pitch on one of my shoulders, who else helped I don't know. :)
I think once the players left the pitch I made myway to Portsmouth and Southsea station for a service train home via London.
I had my head out of the window bellowing joyfully as we sped through the waiting Leicester contingent at Fratton station.

Micky besides click in the background the two girls holding the flag are Jeanette colkin and Yvonne Orton now Grewcock. Was there as well fun day around before during and after the match. One of the highlights was gatecrashing a deaf and dumb disco in Oxford after.Im sure borebage as a few stories of that day.

I still have the braille version of Won’t Get Fooled Again by the Who that the deaf and dumb DJ handed to me!

……he was a bit heavy on Stevie Wonder, Peters & Lee and Jose Feliciano. Any Ray Charles was conspicuously missing. But Pinball Wizard “that deaf, dumb, blind kid” was his surefire floor filler!

Yeah, I gave this pic to Alan years ago when he came round to see us

I was there, too. There was no way that Portsmouth FC was going to sanction City being presented with the trophy post-match.

BLUE ARMY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
