New to real ales

Blue-streak

Roofer
Just starting out (I’m still a young buck compared to most on ere!)
So I want some recommendations please. I know for a fact I don’t like the really dark ones, they’re like chewing tarmac! Any good ones to make me commit and leave lager behind forever?

Go to a place that sells a lot of ale not just a token one ale in a mainly lager place.

A decent ale house will allow you to try a beer first, do that and find one that you like.

Golden Ales are a good bet to try.

When pubs re-open don't go to places that allow you to try the beer first, you'll be waiting an age to be served whilst waiting behind half a dozen bearded weirdies trying every drink, comparing them & making notes before you even get served.

Only kidding. Don't listen to me, I like chewing tarmac.

If you like lighter stuff, look out for Oakham Ales beers, JHB or Bishops Farewell, don't tar all dark beers as chewy, lots of different sorts, l prefer the dark stuff😁

Add my vote for JHB. Citra, also from Oakham Ales is worth a try as well.

Try Church End goats milk it’s my local brewery and thats a decent lighter session ale.
Don’t listen to Soho he wouldn’t know a decent pint 😂

Gotta think that many breweries don't help themselves by using such stupid wanky names. Goat milk?? And why many of the can designs aren't banned for the same child-appeal concerns that were levied at Hooch and other alcopops years ago is beyond me – M&S's beer fridges look like a fucking primary school art show...

It’s the taste I’m bothered about but I know what you mean with the names.
It’s a great lighter session beer that you can get all over the country it’s why I’ve mentioned it.
Even more embarrassing can anyone own up to having a pint of carling or Fosters as they’re ‘first’ pint back in the boozer when you can have the exact same in a can at home 😂

Mine was a San Miguel. The first pub I went into had no real ale but it was on the seafront and with a decent view.

As for Church End I’ve seen Gravedigger a few times but not for years. I’d say it was far from widely available all over the country.

If you think the bottom is falling out of your world
Drink Marstons Pedigree and you’ll think the world is falling out of your bottom

If you’re within 20 miles of Burton it’s the mutz nutz

Green King IPA is a good session ale finish with Abbots or Speckled Hen

I had green king IPA for the first time yesterday and it was delicious! 👍

Before MK Dons away a number of us met at the Red Lion at Fenny Stratford. I don’t know what it’s like now but the landlord there had some decent beers on. He took a few quid that day too before and after the game!!

Might be worth a look? It’s by the canal so will have a decent outside space for drinking till it opens fully in May.
