The “press” dont report on the war. I havent read a newspaper since I can remember. Neither do “MSM”. I seldom watch it. I build my opinions from similar places to you. Largely starting with twitter, then reading up on links from it. Sorting the wheat from the chaff.
 
If you’re genuinely interested watch some of this guys videos on YouTube. (He can be a bit of a dick but can’t we all) this vid ain’t Ukraine but he travelled all over Ukraine prior to the invasion. This vid is Georgia but it shows what happened to some folk after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Belarus, Georgia, Chechnya, what is the obvious link to their problems? Leaving the USSR would have been difficult for anyone, as their lands had been subjugated and plundered for decades.
