Yes, and he went through long periods of very heavy alcohol and cocaine use. And for a while he was so addicted to smoking that he was once told by a doctor that he would die before he was sixty if he didn't quit. All that must have taken its toll on his health.

I perhaps should have been clearer. I wasn't particularly surprised at the news given his health issues, just shocked at the passing of an actor in a show that was massive when I was in my early 20s. It's always a bit of a jolt when that happens.
 
Are there really people who don't know who he is.
Wasn't a fan of Friends myself but surely they are four of the best known faces ever on tv.
 
Very sad at such a young age. Never seen a single episode of Friends but the wife forced me to have a picture taken on the recreated Central Perk set at Warner Brothers studios in LA when we had a tour there. I was much more interested in the various Batmobiles TBH.
