Leicester market.

Isn't it only temporary?
The market stalls have been moved to Green Dragon Square (next door) while they upgrade the Market Square area.

As somewhat of an outsider I've always viewed Leicester Market as one of the city's main selling points full of colour and character, not sure why they'd want to change that.

Problem is at nights its full of dossers, druggies, pissed up caants and immigrants sleeping on the market display stalls (not very hygienic). Cos its open. They like the protective roofing.
Think they are going to make it more secure to keep this lot out and off the stalls.

Just been up town, it's gone, a big part of my life, gone.
Won't be long before we have festival dances
God how I detest pete and his racist planning dept.
I've only ever seen clips of it on the telly but I'm confused at to why the market going (which it seems it isn't) would be a down to racism on the part of the planning department. Are all the stallholders white?

As opposed to the rest of the city centre which is full of drunk 19 year olds getting shit faced, throwing up in the gutter and asking any passer by for a fight at night time. And that's just the wimmin!

Yes but the slight problem with the underclass crashing out on the boards on top of the market stalls serving tables is that they piss, shit and spew up all over the boards along with squirting drugs all over the piss and shyte.
Not a great place for the market traders to then stack their fruit and veg early in the mornings.
Unless you fancy your Cox's Orange Pippins laced with piss, shit and drugs?

Are they going to replace the Christian cross on cheap side then?
Doubt it, removed it soon as they could.

So Pete who has warned that the council could go bankrupt next year and he's investing millions in the market........

The Market is council property.
Either is closes, or there has to be investment in it.
It has been revamped many times over the years.
There is strong evidence that the English language developed here in Leicester, in its market places.
It's worth keeping...

The capital budget is used to fund such enterprises and that isn't any area of deficit, as far as I know.
It is the general fund budget that is under pressure - and councils are not permitted to use one budget, to alleviate pressures on another...

It's a column, which was originally one of eight that supported a domed structure, at the junction of Highcross Street and Hight Street.
Topped by a finial and cross above the dome.
The column dates from 1577 - but the cross is a much newer replica of the original.
It has been on many journeys - in 1836 to The Crescent, a garden, Newarke Houses Museum and the Market Place.
Now close to the original spot.
The Christian cross is utterly irrelevant...

I don't think Pete gives two hoots about Leicester's heritage.
Like the house and block on Garden Street with the only known remaining 1up 1 down property in Leicester
Built in about 1820 ( Georgian) and a real throwback back to how our ancestors lived.
Unlike Birmingham who preserved a section of back to back and courtyard houses, Pete is quite happy to let the bulldozers move in.
Leicester was known for having some fantastic architectural buildings in the early 20th century but over generations they have pulled them down, often to be replaced by abominations like the one that faces the clock tower.

Not sure that Pete makes the decision about Garden Street.
That's the Planning Committee and no decision has been made.
The property is privately owned...

Bit confusing why Pete gets the blame for Leicester's loss of historic buildings?
He wasn't in charge when most of them went, decades ago...
The Mayor seems to be very interested in the heritage of the city.
Which buildings has he been responsible for demolishing?
