Presumably the older plaques wouldn't have got so brown and stained if they had been lacquered.
Anyway years ago Kendal used brasso on them.

I’m only a lurker on here, but was friends with filbertsdad and have lost a few others, including one getting scattered there next week.

If we ever need to replace any of those seating slats etc, I’ll be more than happy to supply those. This bench should outlive us all!
