First Friendly

In the desperation stakes we are far more in need of a midfielder who can create something for the forwards.
At present we have no one who can play a defensive splitting pass, let alone being able to take another player on.
Yeah we do, his name is Dennis Praet. Whether he stays or not is an entirely different matter, but played in the middle he absolutely has that ability, and even showed it yesterday.

Incidently, the first surprise was our starting keeper. Can't remember his name, but we have,
according to the official site, three others in this position. Ward, Iverson and Smithies.
And we seem to be signing a fourth, from Denmark.
Ward was not involved yesterday and seems destined to leave, and Iverson is not in favour,
else why spend six mill. on a new 'first choice'? Puzzling...
So we are well stocked in this department. As we are at centre back. The youngster looked
energetic at left wing but some more support for JV looked necessary as neither Daka or Ian
did not exactly hammer the door down for a f
If the plan is for Stolarczyk to be number two to Hermansen, I suppose it would make sense for him to be first choice until Hermansen arrives.

Brauny, I do agree with a lot what you write however a couple of points I’d like to clarify.
> if we want to return to the premiership we have to play at that level even though we’re in the Championship.

> In terms of the quality list I can only agree on Maddison the rest are nothing and I think we can cover the loss of him.
Fcuking Tielemans good riddance.
You do not need to be Premier League quality to get out of the Championship. That’s why two thirds of the promoted teams come straight back down again, because they are not.

What you need to be is exactly what Jock Wallace used to say - you need to be fitter than everybody else, and you need to be well organized. Add a little bit of quality on top of that, and ideally someone who knows how to score goals, and you’re off to the races!

My thoughts exactly. If they get promoted then they will have the Premier League riches to bring in better quality.

The plan is to have 2 keepers playing one for crosses and the other for shot stopping😄

2 others then

I think most of us thought Iversen was alright last season when he was finally given a chance. He should have been given a chance earlier in the season, if he was we probably wouldn’t have gone down.

I think he’ll be a good enough pair of hands this season for us.

Ward should go but will he? We do need another keeper though I’d say and if we can get one to push Iversen then all the better.

Hermansen will be number one this season. It will then come down to whether Iversen is happy to be number two again.

Not particular about keepers really its the forwards that should be the.priority now as we look light in that important area as we cant rely JV and others are seemingly uninterested in playing for us

I think the performance was OK. There was a lot of ‘ring rustiness’ evident but that is to be expected at this stage of preparation. It is absurd to start reading too much into the performances and results of pre-season friendlies (particularly the early ones). What encouraged me was that we certainly matched them in terms of basic physical conditioning and fitness – that should be (and is) the priority in the early stages of pre-season training.

A year ago I watched the early pre-season friendly against Notts County. Now they were a few weeks ahead of us in terms of preparation (their season was starting well ahead of ours), so a certain amount of disparity was to be expected from a purely footballing perspective. However, what I saw really concerned me – they were clearly well ahead of us in terms of basic physical conditioning. They looked (and were) stronger, quicker and much faster in the breakdowns than our lot, and that should not have been so apparent. I am convinced that something was very wrong with our pre-season preparation last year and I would certainly be interested in the views of the players on this, because we still looked very 'under-cooked' in the early matches...

Thats a reason for us looking unfit for purpose
