if you can't be good be lucky, right?

The good
1 - winks is class, top class. so is the goalie.
2 - setup and shape looked good.
3 - we moved the ball from back to front through the middle more times in the first half than all of last season combined because winks took the ball off the central defenders and can pass, something ndidi is incapable of.
4 - mavididi showed flashes of brilliance although he could turn out to be another DG.
5 - doyle and macateer looked assured at this level.
6 - ricardo looked better than he has done in a long time.
7 - kdh scored twice which hopefully will do his confidence good.
8 - looked better when praet came on for ndidi and nacho for vardy.
9 - we looked better the longer the game went on.

the bad
1 - faes and vesty are a calamity waiting to happen.
2 - could've been 3-0 or 4-1 down if kov had any kind of finisher up front.
3 - still can't defend set pieces. mcfadzean was all by himself on the goal line then ran 3 yards forward to head unopposed whilst ndidi just pointed at him instead of marking him.
4 - ndidi being more forward was a plus but he still can't pass.
5 - neither can kdh.
6 - for 60+ mins we literally created nothing in the final third because of 4 and 5, only the widemen gave us any penetration, and even then there was very little of it.
7 - vardy barely touched the ball the whole game.

summation
hard to judge on one game. but.
i like the setup and the style, but we need 3 more players to make it work, 2 mids and one central defender (so we can fack off vesty, even if coady recovers). if praet goes to torino he'll need to be replaced. kdh can score but he overhits through balls by 5 yards most of the time, he needs a partner better than him to take more of the creative load. without a few extra players we won't be in the top 2 come may. on another day we might've got stuffed.

i'll take 3 pts but it was daylight robbery.

A new manager with a different approach, as well as new players to be slotted in and all that on top of a very inadequate pre season. It was always going to be sketchy.
Like I said earlier the result was way more important than the performance for a multitude of reasons. Hopefully the manager will work on and sort out some obvious rough edges.
I will take this ' lucky ' result all day long over a sublime performance that didn't yield 3pts.
It was the opening game, it was Cov, it's one game we really just didn't want to lose.
I expect the first 5-6 games to be tricky, but I am more confident about the season after this game.
Most of last season felt like the end of an era. We all knew that some key players minds were elsewhere. If not all, at least now we have more players starting that want to do something for the club. It already seems like there is a different feel about the place.

Good to hear. I listened to most on Talksport and they were raving about the game, that shows the level this league is at nowadays.

Cov came out and attacked us, this is something we won’t see much this season, especially down here. So add to that list we still need a forward, if not two.

Also our lot got to get more physical, and get use to it instead of moaning

I might be in the minority, but I thought Faes was excellent yesterday. Put Coady alongside him and I think we’ll be in decent shape. Doyle isn’t a fullback, and I’m not sure about McAteer. Definitely need a forward or two, and I really hope Praet stays.

l thought Faes did ok actually.

Now, the potential of first game doom and gloom as gone, I'm quite happy with Sunday. We are no where near what we plan to be but l think the side will pick itself after a couple of months and few good confident performances. Then we can talk about pissing the league !

when winks was out of position the back 2 looked all at sea on a few occasions and got away with it. the classic example was where one of their guys got the ball a few yards outside the D and both faes and vesty backed off wide leaving a gaping hole for him to run into instead of one of them going for the ball. maybe it was lack of communication, but whilst faes is quicker than vesty he still makes the odd bizarre decision. winks also got them out of jail a couple of times with great tracking and challenges.
i have a feeling doyle is a manager favorite, he was solid but doesn't add anything more than any of our existing left backs already do.

I'd rather have Ndidi at centre back than Swan Vesta!
Why not JJ til Coady returns. Faes, is better when he can concentrate at his own role rather than knowing he's got to try and cover the other centre back position as well.
My main worry is lack of a 15/20 goal striker, another wing option, and an attacking midfielder who can pick a pass.
I think its fair to say we got lucky, but who cares!!

Need to see more of Mavadidi before he proves not to be another Tete but he does look promising
