Clough on Weller and Worthington

Great to watch and listen to. Thanks.
I sat on the next table to Gary Newbon in a bar after the Athletico match in Madrid in 2017. He was with Dave Bartram and Trevor Oakes. We had a good laugh with them.

Be interesting to watch the Bloomfield Boys take on Maresco's Mannequins wouldn't it?
I know they didn't win anything but on their day they were fantastic.

I always said we were a good strong hard man defensive midfielder away from being v good. Instead we had Sammels and the Birch. Bless em

You won’t get a bigger fan than me of the Bloomfield boys, but I’m pretty sure (sort of sadly) that they would be thumped by the current team.
Today’s players are bigger, fitter, faster, stronger and much more tactically aware than players in the 70’s. Some may even be technically better.
BUT ..at the same time nothing will change my mind that football was more fun to watch in those days.

I'd seriously doubt that any team could play the style of today's football in that previous generation.
They practically play on bowling greens nowadays. It's all conducive for tippy tappy and more accurate passes.
In the 70' the pitches by winter time were often just mud. The surfaces were bobbly and tacky, not great for sides that wanted to pass the ball on the deck.
In fact it's hard to remember players coming off at halftime with their shirts plastered in mud

Don't recall many teams having defensive midfielders back then. Harder-tackling maybe like Bremner, Giles, Rioch, etc. Everton famously had Kendall, Ball and Harvey. All attacking midfielders. A Peter Storey type is maybe what you had in mind.

I thought Sammels was good. Birch was good at the Hollywood passes and occasional goal but really a failed striker converted to midfield. We had no one better though and missed him when he got injured towards the end of 73/4.

Yes I was thinking of a basic midfield general who’d stick the boot in where necessary. Stiles did it in the 60’s. Bremner for Leeds although everyone of those bastards stuck the boot in. Storey is a good call. Micky Doyle at Man City? I was actually thinking of a Bobby Roberts type of player. He’d have been great in that team. I’ve never known why he was transferred from a Div 2 side when only 29

What about Carlin and Kellard?

A really good team without a top, top DMF hasn't been seen yet.
Yes Kells did the job and was, with Carlin, dumped with promotion gained...

T
They weren’t Bloomfield's boys though. Shame as Kellard could have done a job
They both did a good job getting us out of Div 2. Carlin was just about finished though. Bloomfield didn't want to lose Kellard but Palace wanted him as part of the Birch deal. He didn't really pull up any trees at Palace though. It was just a bit faster pace for him in Div 1.
