Fair play to him for speaking out people assume that just because most footballers are rich that they don't suffer mental health issues.

Due to my wife being a pharmacist I read quite a bit about nutrition and supplements, and we recently listened to a an interview with a cardiologist and university professor from munich the other day on Vitamin D and omega 3. The guy suggested that professional athletes/footballers sometimes lack omega 3*, and that is a reason for many issues (head traumata, muscle injuries etc.) but also major depression among footballers.

He said he was in regular contact with a few sports scientists and knows of a European football club who was taking this very seriously, monitoring their players' omega 3 levels and supplementing those if required. He didn't want to say which team it was.

This is the youtube interview (link) (albeit in German so not of much use for many on here, the issue is being talked about from 33:30 min). The guy is called Clemens von Schacky.

So, there might be a good and purely physical contribution why some footballers fall into depression.

*Omega 3 are a particular fraction of fat, present in seafood, linseed oil, sea algae etc.

Thanks, I'd never heard of that book!! Very interesting!! There is a lot still to learn in terms of healthy lifestyle and nutrition.

It's also best IMHO if you stay away from the pharmaceutical industry as far as possible if you can. Once you have started regular treatment, you're likely to struggle with ever being independent again... in particular when it comes to common afflictions such as high blood pressure, heartburn, high cholesterol, psychological issues etc.
