Allan Clarke

Reading “Can’t Buy That Feeling” it’s very clear that signing Allan Clarke was a huge mistake. David Gibson confirmed that he refused to participate in the Players Pool for the Cup Final; Frank O’Farrell said that he was “difficult”; but worst of all Andy Lochhead states that Clarke refused to implement O’Farrell’s tactics prior to the last game of the season at Man Utd.

I never really liked him. Turns out “Sniffer” was perfectly suited for Dirty Leeds.

It’s interesting to ponder what might have happened if we had spent the 150K elsewhere. We might not have gone to Wembley, but we also might not have been relegated, and the course of history would have been forever changed.

My first example of player power. He realised that if we went down he’d get his move which he’d probably sorted out before we were relegated. Remember in those days going down didn’t mean you lost players even the very good ones. We kept Shilton, Glover, Nish, Cross etc. But he wanted out

Story circulating at the time that Clarke said he did not want to play at Old Trafford on the last day of the season as his wife was ill.

We had his brother Wayne Clarke in 89/90 (11 games,1 goal). He came to us in a part exchange deal when we let Mike Newell go to Everton for £500,000 plus Clarke. After his brief stay with us he left in another part exchange deal to Manchester City that saw David Oldfield come to Leicester.

Clarke went to mighty Leeds and bagged the same number of domestic honours as Daniel Amartey, at Leicester City.
