ALFRED LENTONS

It's been there as long as I can remember, never went in, not many did, somehow managed to keep on trading in recent years flogging books, memorabilia etc.
The last of the old school shops now gone.

Used to be Bush's Music Shop, before Lenton moved from over the road when the opposite side of St Nicholas Street was demolished. I think Alfred Lenton first set up in Silver Arcade. He was a runner-up in the British Chess Championship - though he did once beat the legendary Henry Ernest Atkins...

Ignore me I'm thinking of a different place completely. Is this the shop up near the millennium square bit, by BBC Radio?

Didn't know any of that!Lentons has allways just been there to me!

Went past it a week or two ago and noticed the shelves had been cleared. So I took a piccy because it looked like the end of the road for it.
For a shop I'd never been in I still felt nostalgic for no other reason than since a child it's always been there.
I never recall anyone ever going in or coming out and I really don't know what they did to keep going.
Just looked like a second book shop with other bits and bobs thrown in.

Perhaps it was a front like the turkish barbers...

That's your take on it...I'm interested in Leicester and it's history and don't need your permission to look stuff up - or share information.
I wasn't even born when the shop move to it's recent location, but I'm allowed to be curious.
You're a very fucking odd person...

I'm an odd person! OK Google!

Yes you are...
I was looking on facebook and found it used to be Bush's Music Shop, before Lenton moved from over the road when the opposite side of St Nicholas Street was demolished. Apparently Alfred Lenton first set up in Silver Arcade. He was a runner-up in the British Chess Championship so it says..

Sorted it for you.

Some more bits about Alfred Lenton, in case anyone is interested.
This is from a website, which I have listed below.
Wouldn't want anyone to be confused and think that I knew Alfred personally, or that I possess a photographic memory of every single Leicester Mercury news article.

Thanks for that link.

I was talking to one of my customers about Alfred today. He never played him at chess, but knew him well from the local chess scene in the 60's. He has acquired Alfred's hand written annotations of his matches from the 50's and 60's and is planning to play them out to see how good he was. I'll print this for him as I'm sure he will be interested.
