A date in football history

6th February 1958. The Munich air disaster.
But something I never knew popped up the other day. On the previous Saturday Man Utd went to Highbury and won 5-4 in what was described as one of THE all time great league matches, played in front of over 63000. But two of Arsenal’s four goals that day were scored by Jimmy Bloomfield!

One fact is that Duncan Edwards almost undoubtedly would have been the England captain in 1966. Very sad all round. Apparently England had a very good chance of winning the WC in 58 but 4 of them died in Munich.

Cut down in his prime he played against our lot in the RAOC cup. Immense presence built like brick shithouse, thought l had muscles but he was something else, for his size he had a sublime touch on the ball with a clear eye for any opening even on any surface such a tragic waste of undisputed talent

My old man who watched us for decades and was a real football affectionado said he was head and shoulders THE best all round player he ever saw. Just incredible.

My dad rated Duncan Edwards that much, even as an avid City fan, that he wanted to name me after him. I ended up just having Duncan as my middle name though!

My old man said the same thing when he saw him in the flesh, DE was a different class of footballer.

My mate says he would not stand a chance in todays football with all the restrictions nowadays, he could be right but l like to think Duncan could / would adapt to any progression he was so head and shoulders above, remember this young man was a target at 17 for the old fashioned cloggers of yesteryear and physical play of that time
