50 years ago tonight

A dark day for English football. Drew 1-1 with Poland and thus failed to qualify for the 74 WC Finals. Can remember it like it was yesterday

Those were the days when we were glued to England games. So few live matches on telly, no internet and the world seemed a much smaller place.

Yes it was Clough who called him a clown. I went as well, we had a Jock in our party who loved every minute of it, as if remember, Scotland had already qualified.
Nightmare!!

The real problem was when we were beaten by them in Katowice in June. It meant we had to win. We literally battered them ( 36 shots to 2) but they broke away and scored as we know. To be fair they had a decent side which came 3rd in the WC Finals the following year

They had a very good side indeed in the 70s - Lato, Gadocha, Gorgon, Kazu Deyna, with Boniek to follow. We still battered them in that game though. Ball just wouldn't go in
