What's severe cold weather in the UK? -5?

I'll defend the Englishes here, Joe.

Now I'm not saying they're not pussies, but British cold is nothing to sneezed at. While the mean temperatures are considerably higher, it's damp cold - so it cuts right through layers of clothing making it difficult to get comfortable. Similar to some areas of The Great Lakes but unlike the 'dry' cold of the west.
I happened to be in Leicester* once in November and thought to myself 'Well OK, I don't need to do anything special because it's only November and they're pussies. I'll bring a spring jacket.'

I was unpleasantly surprised at the consequences of my actions.

*Big shout out to the fine owners and operators of Travelodge/Leicester. That's some 5 star service and accommodation right there, Props! (y) I'd recommend them to anyone.
