What made you think...

What made me think...

A year after Thatcher got in by saying Labour isn't working, unemployment had doubled and the start of the destruction of industry was well under way.

The miner's strike. I was at 6th form college. I watched the news reports, naughty miners I thought. Then read some leaflets being distributed by some, what I considered, quite vocal and radical students. I went to one of their meetings, got talking to some of them. Started to see a different perspective.

We are now buying electricity from France some of it generated by coal, and coal dug out by child labour from Eastern Europe.

I was always a bit of a Thatcher supporter, not hugely so but overall I thought she was pretty good.

The one thing I hated though was the way she treated the miners, the NUM under Scargill was too obvious and important a battle to ignore but she became obsessed with it and the damage caused was quite monstrous. That the industry needed revising and modernising was without doubt necessary but maintaining enough capacity in the UK for power generation and a few 'strategic' industries seemed a 'no brainer' at the time and still does.

"What made you think, or changed your thinking, to make you seriously think what the fuck is it all about?"

Sorry, I didn't realise the intention was to start a debate about the right and wrongs about where things started.

You live in a world of which you understand very little. Only an ignoramus would actually ask a question like that.
Do you understand the off side rule ?

Got anything interesting to add?
