It was dull, dull, dull. Why do we bother. We know with Southgate there it’s going to be dull. Did he have his waistcoat on?

I switched off from England around 2002. Recent years with us doing so well has meant to me I’m not so bothered about the national side. It’s all huff and puff and you sadly know when it comes to playing the big boys there’s only going to be one result.

Long long time ago I bothered with England in fact 1966, since that time mediocrity is our byword always flatter to deceive after the rags have bummed us up as something special only to fall down once again

Tartan I expect Scotland to outmuscle us in our group game.
I can’t even contemplate it mate. Every time I do I have to have a word with myself, I’ve accepted we're destined to do nothing other than cause maximum frustration and embarrassment when facing your boys.

We can all but hope Tartan.
Get thru the group and hope for a favourable draw.
Quarter Finals at the most eh ;)

I will be watching and supporting England as I always do. I’m not optimistic, though. First, because our defence is well below the standard of a top international side - you just know that a centre back pairing of Maguire and Stones is going to lead to calamity at some point. Second, because I think we’re still behind other countries when it comes to tactics - as soon as we’re up against a savvy, tactically-smart opposition we never seem to know how to respond.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Foden, Mount and particularly Grealish (if Southgate plays him) perform in a major tournament. Hopefully we’ll score a few goals and provide some entertainment. With a bit of luck we may get out of the group. But I just don’t think our old failings have been resolved and therefore I expect the usual disappointment.

I found it very strange that on Sky Sports yesterday they were discussing what side Southgate should pick for the semi-final. England have only ever one game in the knock stages of Euros and that was on penalties. Will we have to paint the cross of St George on the mini roundabouts again?

Gareth Southgate has never won a trophy as a manager.

He isn't the right man for the job.
The problem would be finding somebody decent to replace him. We don't produce top class coaches in England, so the choice is to either go for a mediocre English manager with little-to-no experience of managing teams at the top level, or an expensive foreign coach who the press will treat as a mercenary and may struggle to connect with the players.

Personally I suspect that when Southgate quits the FA may turn to a foreign manager again, but which world class coach would take the job?

Always thought to manage England you don’t need to be a coach . Hopefully having reached that level players are technically adept and being coached every day at their clubs .
It’s about looking for the best players to fit the system you favour and knowing the weaknesses on the opposition.
Charisma and man management too ( Not sure Southgate has much of the former )

I am wondering where I can buy a ticket to watch Soho's tomatoes growing. Are there covid limitations on how many can squeeze into the greenhouse?

You know Daz for a sensible person you talk a load of bollocks at times.
We have had some of the best players in the world playing for England in the last 55 years, but we cannot seem to gel into a very good side, whether it's Managerial or planning problems I have'nt a clue, but we sail through the prelimaries but once we get into the latter stages of any competition we fail and fail miserably

My interest in England diminished when Wooney pulled a NFP and told to the fans to do one.

Totally lost interest when Woy decided to play Vardy on the left wing as a sub, and drop Drinkwater and take three injured midfielders, the season we won the league.

No doubt il watch the games involving us, but I wouldn't give a fuck if we crashed out of the group stage.

Kendal I was just responding to the question why players that aren't in the squad were playing. Its because the players that would've played have all been involved in European finals i.e Chelsea, Man City and United

I thought England didn't do too badly at the last World Cup. Won a penalty shootout for the first time since 1996(?) and made it into the semifinals.

Not sure they'll do similarly well this time around but that was quite a successful tournament I thought. I remember far worse!!

Agreed. But we stumbled into the SF and should never, ever have lost it...

But the point is whomsoever we pick good bad or indifferent it makes no difference to our play our tactics have been varied over the years but we never play to our strengths we have a goalscorer but he's nearly always picking up scraps, Sir Alf was the last manager I know of to have a practical plan as to how he wanted to play and picked his squad accordingly.
But again I feel we have no cohesive plan to have a realistic chance of reaching the latter stages, Countries know we rely on Kane, Grealish got attention last night but otherwise we did'nt seem to have a clue,
The Austrians are not to the forefront in Europe are they but they knew where the dangers may come from

Too cautious, always too cautious.
Shit their pants and lack belief against better quality opposition.
Problem is the best managers don't fit the shirt and tie brigade in Soho Square

Although at the last World Cup we were more entertaining than usual, it was clear that our old tactical/psychological failings have not gone away. We played three games against strong opposition - Belgium twice and Croatia. We lost all three of them. In the Croatia game we looked ok until Modric and co started to dominate the midfield. After that, we just retreated further and further into our shells until the inevitable happened. It's partly tactics, but also character - a lot of our players just seem to crumble when the going gets tough. It will be interesting to see whether Mount, Foden and Grealish et al can buck this trend.
