……parts of present Leicestershire and Rutland were once a “shallow sea” in the early Jurassic period. Giant “sea dragons” marine reptiles which swam the seas some 140 to 200 million years ago have had their fossilized remains discovered in our 2 counties. A full 33 feet long (10 metre) Ichthyosaurus fossil - the largest ever found in the UK - was discovered near Rutland Water in 2021 and also a more recent fossil skull of the species found during the construction of the new Melton Mowbray by-pass. Most fossil finds of this type are usually fragmented and found along the Yorkshire or Dorset coastal areas due to shoreline erosion. Experts think that larger or full fossil remains are more likely to be found preserved in our inland areas such as the find in Rutland!
