Anyone watched this excellent documentary on netflix? Effectively explains how the algorithms that decide what you are exposed to on social media creates and reinforces extreme polarisation in your ideas and beliefs. Couldn't help but think of this board and certain posters whilst watching it. Well worth checking out and will at the very least make you consider deleting your Facebook account!

The tools to do this have been around for yonks. I was buying search words and phrases on Google back in the early 2000s and SEO and the use of algorithms has developed loads since then. Mark Z was worth billions before Facebook became a vehicle for political influencing because firms wanting to sell stuff used it to target potential markets and paid him for the service.
Hindsight suggests that it was inevitable that this capability would leak into the political arena.
I think its worth remembering that if something is free on the internet then chances are you are being sold to someone.

It isn't just Social Media.
The UK government is also trying to use algorithms to run national policy. It failed with the exam results fiasco. It is also failed with new housing allocation.
It's fascinating to see people looking to Social Media, to reinforce their polarised views. The far-left and the far-right are both much the same thing, as we discussed on the old site, with the Horseshoe Theory. Both are deeply suspicious of all of the things that Social Media is about. Funny old world.
