The Criminal Justice Bill

I wonder how many of the folks who get their knickers twisted when asked to wear a face covering for 20 minutes in Tesco, are on the protest today against a bill which allows incarceration for 10 years for damaging a statue and bans demonstrations in Parliament Square ?

What is the normal sentence for CRIMINAL damage?

Quite .
No idea why another draconian law is needed.
Pure propaganda to throw to the Daily Mail.

Much as I hate to agree with foxgolfer, the bill is an assault on the rights of ordinary people to show their displeasure at the government, it should be resisted at all costs.

Sadly we have no effective parliamentary opposition, so mo legal way to stop it.

Agreed but why do we need more draconian laws against protests ?

As I understand it - No protests in Parliament square , noise limits on protests , 10 year maximum sentence for damaging a public monument, ban on demonstrations that cause “ serious annoyance“ ….. ………

There is a fine line between protesting and criminal damage.
The point is that we already have laws against criminal damage, not that they are currently exercised, but they are there.

The new bill can, and therefor will be used to suppress any protest the government does not approve of.

Well we’ve seen how well the law is used with the nutters blocking motorways

I haven’t studied the new proposals so I take your points. Let’s hope common sense prevails

The British establishment and common sense? Mmmmm.

We know that the Justice System will use any law in existence if it helps them persecute those they do not approve of, remember the Labour Party using new 'Hate Speech' legislation to forcible remove hecklers from their conference?

But on the other hand, if you are XR or any other indulged pressure group, you are 'let off'.

But as you say, we shall see

XR activists were jailed .

Rather depends on what you mean by let off
More little gems in this bill - if you are found to have attended 2 protests you have to inform the government when you move house
It is up to the police how “noisy” you have to be to be considered unlawful .
You can be prosecuted if you are a “bystander”
.

Incidentally . I agree if the purpose of your protest is to block main roads and disrupt transport - that should be unlawful . I also don’t see being asked to wear a face covering as somehow akin to Auschwitz/ Birkenau .

Peaceful protest is a right in this country . What the fuck is going on ?

Forget all that. It was overshadowed by the debate about wearing a bit of cloth on your face.

The next instalments of populism are Operation Red Meat and Operation Big Dog.

Fuck the state of the country. We must make sure Boris stays in charge, because he's doing such a good job with those vaccines.

Do you think that the Torys going through all of the shenanigans of electing a new leader will help with the "state of the country"

Nothing unless they return to their senses and actually govern for the good of the country rather than a few lunatics in the ERG.

It occurred to me that if the PM was just working his 6 weeks notice until a successor is elected, he’d not exactly be highly motivated to continue to apply himself to the job. Which might not be such a bad thing, depending on you point of view. Or maybe we’d have Dominic Raab deputising …

Given that the Tory membership is the electorate, I would think any successor would have to be pretty well-aligned to the ERG perspective in any case.

The thought of Dominic Raab running anything more complex than Soho's whelk stall in Borough Market is truly terrifying...a nightmare vision only made worse by the possibility of him inviting someone even worse to be his deputy in order to make him look good.

Step forward walking catastrophe - Chris Grayling.

Foook me - we didn't know how well off we were when Theresa May was PM. Another truly appalling notion.

That’s the sad thing about the state of our politics .
You look at the current front bench and know there are things living in ponds who would be better at governing the U.K. than any of them.
This won’t end well for anyone

An amendment…..

“require police officers to tell the truth in public inquiries”

Blimey, can’t see that happening.

The Lords doing their job .
It needs reform big time but imagine this government ( or an even worse one if possible ) unchecked by them

This bill potentially criminalises anyone at a protest , a gig , a football match if they make a level of noise considered disruptive by The Home Secretary .

Meanwhile …. Face masks … the BBC …..
