Some Notts Stuff

"This is the big one". I remember that, as will those of a particular generation of fans. The current generation knows little about the local derbies v F*r*st and the SBS that we grew up on. As their fans seem to think it matters we need to put them back in their box. Being the holders ought to mean something to Rodgers and the team, though who we can put out to play is anyones guess. Thanks Micky for that piece of history.

Was that the same year of the big pitch invasion?
I'm not sure if I'm missing a pitch invasion or not, but the one l remember clearly was around 71/72 and it wasn't an invasion it was forest escaping a kicking. This was a night match (its the on. with the photo if the scum on the pitch infant of the Filbert street end) we'd got in late and all the lads had them backed into the bottom corner of the kop (east stand side) they had the OB stopping it kicking off but it was on the verge of them getting steamed that the police let them jump the wall and walked them down the running track.I was right up close to them and they knew they were in serious trouble. Others ran across from the main stand enclosure to join them in escaping. We all went round the other end when the gates opened but they had gone, and they smashed all the windows of the shops up Waterloo street.

'68 Forest were surrounded in the Kop, Leicester were at both sides and in front of them so there was no escape route. l was sat on the wall watching it unfold from about 2.00.

I feel there's one I'm forgetting though

There was a couple of stabbings at that 71/72 Game. I have a complete chapter on 'The F**e*t Riots' That Greg Chapman gave to me. I'll ask him if We can use it in a couple of editions of The Roof, also I've got a chapter on 'Painting The Trent End'

there was someone stabbed on Aylestone road near Brazil street corner, we got off the bus nearby and was talking to some of the lads stil there. Didn't mention the stabbing at that point, just that we'd just missed a fight with them. I think we heard later about the stabbing.

There was a right punch up on the bridge after our away win in 72? Remember we were leaving the ground and it all just kicked off. They’d been running battles during the game along the terracing that ran the length of the pitch. ( the one to the left of the Trent End if looking from there).

l was in the Bridgeford end with my grandad, can't remember seeing much. l do remember chasing them across Trent Bridge a few years after. Also can remember a copper getting pushed in the Trent at the back of the Trent end one year in the '70's.

The Mercury was the best on the following Monday or might have been the Saturday. They had confiscated swords knifes bog chains darts in gloves all sorts.

It was the Monday. Page 5 or so of those who’d caused a problem on the Saturday. Full names the lot.
My mate got into a scuffle in the Kop during the infamous 6-2 Birmingham game. Knocked the coppers hat off. He was ‘escorted’ out and taken on the walk of shame towards the tunnel. I wasn’t at the game as I’d just returned from working in Germany. The next day his folks always held a pre Xmas party. My mate told me he’d been arrested but keep schtumm. My old man chirps up ‘ Hey xxxxx. Was that you I saw being taken out by a copper yesterday at the match’ ( He sat with his mate in the centre stand overlooking the tunnel). ‘Yes Arthur. But keep quite and I’ll keep you topped up with gin’. No wonder he could hardly stand up by 4.30.
So on Monday evening there he was on page 5 with the other reprobates who’d been nicked. He took the paper before his folks could see it. His master plan had worked. Or so he thought. Sadly my mum saw it and immediately phoned his mum. Boom!
The daft bit is that his mum worked at the Merc and could have had his name erased from the article. But when you’re 19 you can’t think of everything!!

l remember the 6-2 well, there was hardly any Brummies there. At the time away fans had pen 1, me and my mate climbed over to have a chat with them, but it was that cold it turned into nothing. I didn't know there was any trouble at that game to be honest and l guess the crowd was ver low.
It was a bit of a feather in your cap to get walked around the pitch by the OB.

That 2-6 was the coldest I’d ever been at a football match to this day
The long harsh winter finally arrived with a vengeance on the 4th of December that year, when, in sub-zero temperatures, we welcomed Birmingham to the Filbert Street ice rink. For some reason, the City players didn’t seem to give two fucks that day, starting with taking to the pitch in screw-in studs. Brum on the other hand had turned the pitch into Freeman Hardy and Willis pre-match, and by the time the game kicked off, they’d picked the right footwear. In yellow they raced into a four nil lead attacking the Tundra End, and four became six early in the second half. Six nil down seemed to be the wake up call the home team had been waiting for, and we pulled two goals back. But there was no credit in a second half draw, draw? My arse!................The Roof Fanzine Issue 1

Looks like the away fans were in compost corner? Later to become the Supporters Club Corner.

You can see the posh seats in the centre of the East Stand (or was it still the Popular Side then?)

yes, there was some in pen 1 because we met them. Horrible day all round, it looked like it was best to put crosses in and high balls not so much us having the wrong boots on. Maybe a bit but the game plan seemed better.

Bad game, went from there straight for a beer then granby halls to see rod Stewart in concert.
he came on saying " good team you got here".
cannot remember about the cold though, for me that will always be roker park open end opposite that Dutch barn, with the wind howling off the sea. Seriously fucking cold.

Bolton Wanderers in League cup 301105, went to extra time as well. Froze to death in the upper tier of the away end.
